Does Costco make you fat??
on 3/31/18 4:51 pm
You guys are right...My thread should have read..."Does Costco contribute to the nations obesity Problem"...
Of what I see at my local Costco, it looks like there is a larger percent of obese people shopping at the store, than in the general population. This is what I view. Just like fast food places, Costco has designed their store to attract people who have an issue with weight gain. It is there. No, you do not have to consume the bad samples. Also you can make wise choices on the food court. I do a lot of physical work and exercise. I do burn my calories. My blood pressure, heart rate, cholesterol/lipid panel are all good. I do eat wisely, but I do enjoy my other foods also. Just me.
So if the thread had started with..."Does Costco contribute to the nations obesity Problem", what would your response be??

Well maybe the overall rate of obesity in the population where you live has more to do with it than Costco's marketing strategy.
I live in a place dubbed one of the fattest cities. Cheesesteaks and hoagies are the culprit in my region.

Aww hell yeah, fat shaming!
I stock up on frozen chicken breasts, sausages, and shrimp ****tail. I buy jerky-making supplies there in bulk, since we eat a lot of it at my house. And they have good prices on fresh fruit and veggies, because my son would easily eat his weight in blueberries and bananas if I let him.
Just as at any grocery store, there are good food choices at Costco, and some that are not as good.

What lawsuits are you talking about? I don't think Costco is working to make people addicted to food. I think they're trying to make a profit & will stock their food court with whatever will sell. I've seen obese & normal sized adults & children buying food there. I've only seen samples given in the main aisles, not at the food court. Even if they did give a sample of whatever food they had, the point is to get you to buy food.
Businesses will give samples if it suits their interests, which is often repeat customers, of all sizes. Not sure where you're going with your post.

Agree to disagree. I do see more obese people at Costco than at say a Walmart. Just look the next time you are there. I could be wrong, but I don't think so. No, I am not wishing to shame anyone. Just trying to keep my eyes wide open.
My mind goes to more and more fast food hamburgers having more and more sugar in their buns. More sugar in the ketchup. KFC puts sugar in their coleslaw!! And Costco offers a hotdog/polish dog with a free refill of Pepsi (or other drinks) for $1.50 Am I wrong...Does Costco want you to drink your fill of their soft drinks...And more so?? You would think they would have a cost control on the soft drink machine...Yes?? Is it costing them money...Or making them money in the long run?? I know we have choices what to eat and not. I get that. Just saying obesity makes companies money...There is a method behind what they do.
Soft drinks literally only cost pennies for the company, honestly. Restaurants everywhere could sell soft drinks for a quarter and still make a profit on them, but look at us paying 2-3 dollars for them. And up to $10 at a movie theater! Free refills are hardly more than a drop in the food cost bucket.
I've never noticed a more disproportionate ratio of obese people at Costco than anywhere else I shop. It's a societal problem, not one for any specific store.

Sam's Club has the same combo deal. I don't think one store is more culpable than another -- they all sell what moves.
