The smells!!
Hello all,
Day 5 post op and going a little nuts with my sense of smell. I've always been slightly sensitive to odors, but now!???? Crimeny I want to keep my nose plugged. The worse is when my guy goes out for a few drinks. I swear it smells like every kind of old stale rotten brooze you could combine, drives me nuts! I don't want to sound like a nag, but ugh! And garlic breath - please! And the other odors as well, fed my cats some wet food - gag. it's all a bit much.
Please tell me this is normal, but more important please tell me this will pass!!

Its one ofvthe least common side effects of the surgery, but it still happens often enough. Ive never seen a medical explanation gor it. I dont think its really been studied, as it isnt dangerous, and it will go away over time.

I had the same thing happen. I swear I could smell fertilizer a mile away. It subsided slowly (was gone by a few months in).

There definitely seems to some surgery-nose connection albeit I personally did not have the hyper-smell issue.
Also you could be just a bit extra cranky. Day 5 post op ain't easy. You likely haven't eaten anything solid in a long time and the pleasure centers of your brain that were so used to being satisfied by salty/fatty/sweet/carby deliciousness are basically screaming "WHY HAVE YOU FORSAKEN ME?" Also add in the little fact that your stomach/guts are recovering from a MAJOR TRAUMA.....these are tough times.
But in a few days you're gonna see your surgeon and get on a scale and see some uplifting scale results. And then provided you just follow instructions, you'll be losing weight, without the stress of constant hunger, for quite some time. Hopefully by then the smell of stale beer won't be quite the same issue it is now
Thanks Scott... Lol did you call me cranky? ?
What I have noticed is my fatigue today, zero energy. But i know this will pass. And yes, I do miss food and the "good" smells but I'm not at all hungry. In fact I feel very full and am challenged to keep getting in those liquids but I'm doing it because that's my job right now.
It'll be nice to get to full liquids, and some minor texture difference and flavors. But I sure wi**** was only one week of that instead of two that is standard in my clinic.
I don't think I'll ever adjust to the smell of stale beer, but maybe I won't be so cranky about it. ?

Thank you Cabin!
I have already noticed some tastes shifts. Minor since I'm not eating but for instance I normally could tolerate maybe even like, the vanilla protein shakes. Cracked one open this morning and took a sip - gross gross gross! I just had one on Wednesday with no issue. Now I'm trying the clear protein drink so I can get my protein in.
It'll be interesting to see how things change over time. What foods were blah that might become favs or food I loved that might make me gag? Time will tell.
