How long does this last!?!

It does go away! I was nauseous for several weeks though, mostly due to dehydration

Three things:

  1. Ask if you can get a prescription for something stronger. I can't remember the name of the medication I had, but it was prescribed to cancer patients to help with nausea. It really really helped. Let me see if I can figure out the name and I'll get back to you.
  2. If you aren't meeting your fluid intake and you start to feel ill, please take that seriously. call your surgeon or doctor asap. You can get IV fluids which will help a ton. But start drinking while you still feel better, because the fluids will wear off. Dehydration is deadly-go to the doctor if you need to.
  3. Talk to your surgeon about checking for a stricture. Nauseau and the inability to tolerate any liqueds was my first symptom. I suffered for a month thinking my upset stomach would go away. I couldn't eat and eventually I couldn't even keep down water. I went three days without any water. I was hot and cold all at the same time. It was miserable. They thought I was just dehydration, but the root cause was a very bad stricture that made it impossible for me to stomach anything.Take it seriously! You can't ask too many questions to your surgeon in the beginning.

Frel better. I'll be thinking and praying for you throughout the day.

How did things go after your doctor visit? Did you learn anything, feeling any better? I've been thinking of you.

Your really sweet that is so nice to know.

He said it' more typical in sleeve for nausea not bypass... he gave me different nausea prescription but I still can't eat or drink. And I'm still miserable.

I finally went to urgent care due to being so dehydrated and got done iv and zofran. Im..(butt shot).. felt better the rest of that day and next but now I'm back to it feeling like something is in my throat and my stomach turns every time I drink.

I'm not the best mentally, getting tired of this. Monday will be 3 weeks post op

Hi, I just joined this site in hopes of realizing I am not alone in this feeling. I am 6 weeks post-op RNY and have been suffering from nausea and an aversion to different smells and tastes for the last couple of weeks. This has caused gagging and some dry heaving. I was sent for IV fluids and vitamins twice which helped some but my doctor figured out some of it was a thiamine deficiency (B1) which we typically get from breads, rice, pastas... You know the stuff we can't have now. So she gave me two injections of that and I now take it daily as a vitamin supplement. I still have some nausea so she has me taking Zofran every 8hrs regardless of nausea until I can get past this stage. Being in ketosis from the surgery I think has also played a role. Everything tastes terrible, even water. I have found getting a gallon of water and putting some lemon in it has helped sooo much. The lemon helps with the acidity and I can get my water in.

Oh my goodness, I can only imagine how frustrating and draining this must be! I really hope they can get this figured out or that it passes SOON. Enough alread. I wish I had advice to offer but I think those with experience have offered the best they know. I think I'd be headed back to the doctor, just seems like a long time for this to be happening, but I know everyone is different. Sure would be good if you could at minimum keep yourself hydrated.

Good luck to you and please keep us informed! I do think about you.
