Rny scheduled for 745am Wednesday and I am freaking
I am freaking out I am like second guessing myself and the decision to have the surgery !!! I'm scared ... I love veggies and I love salad, and straws. All thing's I hear you can't have anymore. I'm not quite sure what I need here... reassurance?? Like I've been waiting for this for 4 years and now I'm talking myself out of it. Can I have a poll? How many people can eat vegetables? How many people can eat a normal meal? Terri tablespoons? That's really it.
Signed
freaking out
Yes, you can still have vegetables. Not right away depending on your surgeon and plan, and you might have to prepare them differently but many people here eat vegetables. Just eat your protein first.
Im three weeks out from RNY and my plan allows for soft-cooked/well steamed veggies starting in a few more weeks. But protein first, then veggies are whatever I still have room for. Raw fruits and veggies will be allowed much later as they're harder to digest.
The eating restrictions are for a very short time, for your safety and healing. You have the whole rest of your life to eat whatever you want, if you're willing to accept the consequences.

Pretty much everybody freaks out a little bit before surgery, it's normal. Just move forward and go through with it, all your worries about eating re: veggies and small amounts are solved over time. You'll find what works for you but most people are able to eat veggies over the long term, it just takes a bit to get there.

It's not to often I hear people fearing not ever being able to eat a salad again. Donut, cake, yeah- salad no. Mainly because salad and veggies aren't what caused our obesity. Fear is not rational I supppse...
i had salad with chicken for lunch yesterday. I eat broccoli, carrots, green beans occasionally- no ill effects.
I don't drink from straws, mainly because anything I would drink with a straw is likely unhealthy anyway.
All the best today!

You will have a few months without salads or veggies, but there is not reason you can't tolerate them after that--it's just a matter of finding the best way to fit them in with a high protein diet, which has to be your priority. I am 2.5 years out. I eat "normal" meals just a smaller portion than I used to.
I know its scary and you might have a little buyers regret in the first few weeks when you are sore and sick of protein shakes, but it gets sooooo much better, and will be the best decision you ever make. You are not going to regret this!
that's really just the first few months. I can eat pretty much anything now. I can use straws (but don't for environmental reasons - NOT physical reasons).
now in maintenance, I'm basically a standard "light eater" - like many of my never-been-obese friends are. Portions are small, but not ridiculous. When I go out to eat, I'll order an appetizer - sometimes two - or if I order an entree, I'll eat half of it and have them box the rest up. I physically can't eat any more than that. But it's enough that I doubt anyone thinks twice about it - they just assume I'm a light eater.
that was NOT the case right after surgery. Yes - I ate a couple of tablespoons of things. But that is temporary. You'll gradually increase the amount. But if you're like most of us, you may not even care, because most of us lose our hunger for the first 6-12 months. For the first time in my life, I didn't really care about food anymore. It was wonderful!! (wi**** would have lasted....bah!)
Sounds like you're getting lots of good advice, I too was concerned about salad and vegetables, for some reason not being able to eat pasta anymore I figured I could cope with, I'm only a couple of weeks out and just moving into the pureed food, but I know better things will come.
The hard part at first is forcing yourself to eat when you're not hungry and not everything tastes great, but I'm adding tastier things as time goes on. You won't want anymore than 1/4 to 1/2 a cup of anything at first even soup.
I know the stress but just remember why you made this decision and you'll be okay.

most of the restrictions are for very soon after surgery. As you go on your world of what you can have opens up.
That being said, I found as the weight came off I didn't WANT to have many things that I used to crave. Tastes change and so do cravings.
I am 9 months post op and eat veggies daily and salad often.
As far as straws go, I don't miss them one bit. In fact, I've been reading how detrimental straws are to marine life and am really happy that I no longer use them.
Good luck, nerves before surgery is completely normal.

I was in your position just last week. I was so so scared. Write down your why's and just make yourself! It is scary, it is life changing, but you WILL feel so great and so so happy when you step on a scale and are seeing the lbs drop!
You can do this!!!
