Science behind AMAW/CAMAW??
There are lots of good answers above. Deb mentioned how this got started, and the article Mahonia linked mentions some of the specific science behind it.
We don't need carbs at all. None. Zero. We can live just fine without them. We do need protein and fat in order to live. Carbs interfere with fat burning, and encourage fat storage. Carbs lead to craving more carbs. Carbs, not fat, cause cholesterol issues, as was long suggested.
I don't eat veggies or fruits at all, so I get zero fiber. I've had people tell me it's impossible, but it obviously is not. I don't get any constipation or other bathroom issues. Perhaps because I eat a high percentage of fat, but that's just guessing.
Dense protein makes me feel satisfied longer than any other food, and consequently I eat less. The more carbs I eat, the more I want to eat in general.
I got super morbidly obese eating a primarily plant-based diet. Remember that all sugar, flour, and starches are 100 percent plant based.
I'm healthier now than I ever was before, and that's really the bottom line.
I think the greatest thing that AMAW and CAMAW show those who participate is how far we have drifted down the carb rabbit hole. Once you remove those things from your diet, it's easy to realize, from how we feel, and the scale, that we had drifted off plan. Doing it as a group makes it easier, more fun, and gives us all a little accountability. All of those things are based between our ears, which is always where the biggest part of our struggle will be.

Thanks, Grim! I completely agree with everything you said. It has been a huge help to me. I knew I had gotten stuck in the rabbit hole of carby disaster but I had no idea I was that far down! I have had some issues with the constipation during the process BUT I also have been struggling with getting all my water in so I'm guessing that's playing a huge role in the matter. It has definitely reset all the cravings and head hunger so there is absolutely something to be gained from doing AMAW/CAMAW. I really appreciate the info and support that you guys have given here. Thank so much for taking the time to share with me!
Dr Atkins started high protein dieting more than 50 years ago. He taught that a person would have a 10% advantage in weight loss with very low carb (less than 25 per day).
So if a person were to lose 10 pounds with cutting calories, the same person should lose 11 pounds on high protein.
Dr Atkins also advised that a person can sometimes switch off and go to high carb, no protein for a while. That means a diet of fresh fruit and vegetables with no meat or diary. No bread, flour, sugar, potatoes, rice flour, peas, corn, or sugar. Just things like fresh apples, peaches, cherries, pineapple, oranges, pears, cabbage, celery, lettuce, zucchini, tomato, cucumber, radishes or onion. He said that you could do one or the other. He recommended mainly high protein and once in a while a break with fruit, vegetables and no meat at all.
Both can trigger a quick weight loss if you stick to it for a month or so.
Real life begins where your comfort zone ends
This is great info! Thanks for sharing this! I will have to share it with my hubby tonight, he's wanting to do a ketogenic lifestyle change but when he went to his doc appointment today they said that it's not healthy long term. Maybe he can break every once in awhile and do the fresh fruit and veggie phase for a bit? Thanks so much!
