I revised in July 2016. My revision was due to uncontrollable GERD. I was basically at goal . . . I had gained about 12 lbs from eating crackers to control the acid and that weight came off pretty quickly. I didn't revise to lose a significant amount of weight, so I can't comment from experience, but my surgeon did tell me you're unlikely to lose as much or as fast as with a virgin surgery. My recovery was great. No significant pain. The morning after my surgery they actually had to send someone out to find me when my surgeon came to check in on me. I was up and wandering the hospital.

Do you have any more specific questions??

Hi Misselle,

I understand this completely but if the reason you are having a revision was because of compliance issues with the sleeve, you may want to try therapy first. Compliance is a huge part of any bariatric post op and rest of your life plan. If you are not willing to follow the rules, you can gain or not lose with any surgery.

It wasnt compliance issues my sleeve is actually bent which is the cause for a needed revision. The weight gain is a result of that.

Hi,

To answer your original question, you can lose all your excess weight with a revision. Since I have had two revisions and started in the "Morbid Obesity" category with a BMI of 55 and now at almost a normal weight and still losing, it can be done. You will just have to work harder at it. The difference between the sleeve and the RNY is that the portion control is replaced by malabsorption and some portion control with the RNY. I could eat far less with the sleeve in the beginning (1st year) and then the banana shaped sleeve got bigger over time and I could eat anything. I find with the RNY, I can eat a larger portion (I don't though) but I cannot eat very fatty rich foods or anything sweet without ramifications. Therefore I stick to lean proteins and vegetables.

My restriction is still there bit it comes with a lot of pain so im hoping that the pain goes away and i still have the restriction and Malabsorbtion. Is there a reason you choose to convert from sleeve to RNY instead of sleeve to DS.

Hi,

That is easy. The only surgery that would get rid of the reflux was a RNY. I had chronic reflux that would not go away with medications and it was one of the reasons I had the RNY. Not sure I would have done any revision if I could not get rid of reflux. Happy to say most of this has been resolved. My understanding is that the DS would not give me the relief I was looking for because essentially the first part of a DS is a sleeve.

Average weight loss from a revision is 20 pounds.
