Dr was serious about bite size!
I've been reading posts about foods and issues eating. I had a store prepared meal ( HEB makes meals that aren't frozen) with pork tenderloin, rice and broccoli. I tried it on Monday and only got 3 bites in to half portion and had to throw rest away. Stomach hurt like lead weight in it. I chewed the 30 times but didn't help.
I decided to try the second half tonight. I was super careful to cut the meat really small (took forever to eat) but my pouch is fine after 2 oz meat with broccoli. I couldn't eat the rice.
I've learned my lesson! Bite size really made a difference.

Hey PC,
It's also possible that your pouch just isn't ready for those foods yet. The clinic I went through has us hold off on pork and beef until 6 months post-op as they can be harder to digest (every clinic is different). I know of a few people who struggle with rice. And I just had a fight with my steamed broccoli tonight ;) just keep trying. I'm almost three years post-op now and pouchy still gets cranky sometimes!!

I was going to say the same thing. While I am allowed pork. No beef, broccoli and rice/pasta at all for at least the first 12 weeks. Everyone's dr is different tho bc i had to drink meal replacement shakes 2 weeks prior and some got to eat regular meals up until the day before. :). Glad you were able to tolerate it the next time.

There's no way I could have eaten those things at 7 weeks out. I was relying on deli meats, sliced super thin, and chewed extra well. I'd have died trying pork so soon.

Rice is the actual devil. I had it at about a year out. My stomach blew up like a balloon and it ached for days. Since apparently I'm not too bright, I tried it again a few months later. Nope nope nope. Never again.
I too waited several months (4-5) to try pork since it can be really dry. Also I am almost a year post-surgery and while my surgeon okays rice, it makes me sick as a dog...bloated, pain in my tummy, etc. Focus on eating your dense protein and a little later very small portions of veggies. Leave the carbs alone until you have met your goal.

Also meant to mention that broccoli can cause gas in some people, so you may want to be careful with that.

Thanks so much for all your replies. At my 5 week check up my doctor cleared me for solid food and encouraged me to add raw veggies and fresh fruit. But to be sure to add one new food at a time and use small bites with 30 chews.
My surgery was an enhanced recovery protocol where I did a low carb diet for 2 weeks and the went to liquid diet one day prior to surgery. I did have clear liquid day of surgery along with a prepared drink required on my drive to hospital the morning of. I had very little pain after surgery and was up walking in recovery room.
After reading more posts I can see my surgeon's program is pretty different. I do see that I need to be extra careful as I add new foods .
It was nice to hear from all of you. I am an hour away from support group.
I'm still new and learning, but I've come to view what my surgeon allows as what is considered "safe" to eat as far as healing and causing damage to my newly (soon to be) operated-on body. But that may not be what is "good" to eat as far as losing the most weight I can and getting myself to a healthy body weight.
