Hey, I'm Gail, and after a lifetime of trying to get to a happy weight I'm ditching the diets and finally doing the surgery.

I had been all set for a sleeve, but after finding out that my existing hiatal hernia will only get worse and turn my esophagus into beef jerky, I'm going with bypass. So I'll be fixing two problems at once.

My bloodwork came back surprisingly OK -- somehow I brought myself back from the brink of prediabetes last year to a normal A1C this year, and my cholesterol ratio is good.

Just started the liquids-only phase of the pre-op diet today, and holy hunger pangs!

I have a weight-loss blog at gogogail.com, and finally I'll have some results to show.

Hi Gail :) Welcome to OH! I joined in the summer and had RNY 3 weeks ago. You'll love it here! Lots of meal ideas, support, and advice. I've learned so much. Hope to see you around :)

Hello! My surgery is in 2 weeks and I've started my liquid diet now too. My surgeon requires 2 weeks of liquid and another 2 post-op. I'm on day 3 and the hunger pangs to subside. It's your body readjusting to burning the fat it already has. So far this morning it's just been replaced with a kind of apathy. I also find it kind of freeing to not worry about what's for dinner--surprise, it's a protein shake.

About the word diet. Diet=what we eat. After RnY there is post surgery diet. It starts very slowly and then advances to a protein forward diet. Every meal you think about what protein to eat. To be successful long term how and what you will eat will probably change.

Rny is an excellent surgery for someone who is close to being a diabetic.

Good luck. Post or read OH daily. You are in for a ride this year.

I was referring to the word diet in the way most people use it now - the crazymaking, desperate for a miracle, food eliminating way.

I'm new too. Only 7 weeks post surgery. I had a picture of a shrinking liver so my surgery would go as planned. Can you hear it? "In shrinking!"(Like the witch in wizard of Oz)

My blood sugar is back in line now I'm back on solid foods. I needed the surgery to help with disbtes and other related conditions.

Congratulations and best wishes for your surgery.

Hi Gail! I'm also getting the bypass (I have MS and my surgeon prefers bypass over sleeve in this patient population). I'm about to start the pre-op diet tomorrow. I did it back in December for a couple weeks in case the office was able to fit me in for surgery with a cancellation before my insurance changed for the new year, but that didn't happen and now it's officially scheduled for 2/21. We'll be shake buddies for a couple weeks! ;) I did get sick of drinking the same things over and over again and missed food with texture... I even craved a salad just for the crunch lol. But I tried to just remember that I had a goal to reach and took it one day at a time. Each day you stay true to the pre-op diet is progress toward making the surgery easier for your doctor and safer for you. Good luck!
