Protein shakes during nutritionist-supervised diet?

I'm having my first appointment to start my journey on 1/31. Seeing the NP and nutritionist. My insurance company requires me to complete 6 months of NUT supervised dieting. Anyone else who has done this, were you advised to have protein shakes at this stage? If so what kind? I know the two week pre-op diet requires them just trying to get a jump on shopping since I'll be starting the diet on 2/1. Thanks!

I just finished my 6 months, it will be over before you know it!

i drank protein shakes throughout, but not specifically because I was told to by anyone. My husband had RNY in May, so we just already had them around. I had them mostly for breakfast since I don't usually give myself enough time in the mornings to actually fix myself real food. I found that they curbed my hunger and often wouldn't be hungry until around 1 or 2 in the afternoon (I start work at 7, which is when I'd have the shake).

our favorite so far is a 100% whey protein powder by the makers of muscle milk. It's a 6 lb bag at Costco. We like both the chocolate and the vanilla at 27g protein, 130 calories, 3g of carbs. We also buy Premier Protein Which is a ready-to-drink brand. Syntrax comes in 17 flavors and you can buy a sample pack on amazon. When choosing/trying protein just try to keep protein high and sugars, carbs, fat, and calories low.

Thanks! I figure I will need to do shakes because starting work at 7:30 I'm not trying to drag myself out of bed to cook breakfast every day! Protein shakes for breakfast it is! :)

Lol I hear you! It's too easy to eat convenient junk for breakfast otherwise.

It will be much better than my usual stop at Tim Horton's on the way to work!

One important thing to know: many people find that their tastes change a LOT after surgery. A shake that you liked pre-op may taste really gross afterwards. So buy enough for your pre-op supervised diet, but don't load up on anything for the post-surgery diet!

Talk to your NUT about what they recommend. Some people are required to do opti-fast, other people are just told to "log/track calories and eat less."

You will probably get sick of protein shakes, so I'd suggest waiting until the two-week liquid diet to rely on them.

That's for sure! LOL! I haven't touched one of my pre surgery shakes since well...pre surgery. My son however loves them and makes one every morning for breakfast. Says its the only thing that holds him over until his lunch block at school. I do drink the premier ones, usually one a day still but those aren't meal replacement shakes so much as the protein shakes that I had to do pre surgery.

I am 4 months into my 6 months and haven't used the protein shakes. But I think I will probably start after I do my 4 mth weigh in which is on the 23rd. I did buy a 4 pack of slim fast high protein drinks and only used 1 because the fiber ingredient and I did not get along, gave me such pain I haven't wanted to use the rest of the pack.

Welcome and please do what the vets suggest since they've been there done that.

I had to have a 6 month supervised diet as well to qualify for insurance coverage. I didn't have any protein shakes until my 1 week pre-op diet. I lost 34 pounds during that period (almost 1/3 if my total weight loss).
