I am 4 years post op RNY.

I just had my gallbladder removed two months ago (Nov 2nd), my GB was full of stones. I did have a lot of problems with diarrhea for the first month, my body was getting used to working without at GB. I am fine now and feel fantastic at two months post op, and can eat anything and everything is back to normal. I use the vitamin patches and don't take any fat soluble vitamins due to malaboprtion anyways. At my centre its not the practice to remove the GB at time of surgery unless there is documentation stating there is something wrong with the GB and it needs to come out.

I personally would not do a cleanse post op RNY.

Thanks for your input. He's definitely concerned about the diarrhea. While a month of it is no fun, I've known people that suffered with it for years after gallbladder removal. Everyone's body just seems to respond to it very differently. He's been vitamin D deficient in the past and we finally were able to get his vitamin D levels in check...which takes a lot of vitamin D to accomplish this...so he's not looking forward to potentially having this issue again. Glad to hear everything is back to normal.

I won't get into commenting too much as you have gotten a lot of good viewpoints. If nothing else I would be concerned about drinking qt of apple juice a day post-RNY especially if he already suffers from dumping. Natural or not that's a lot of pure sugar. That's why if your blood sugar drops they tell you to drink fruit juice.

Thanks for your input. He drinks the apple juice throughout the day rather than at one time. Very specific things make him dump. A lot of foods and drinks would make him dump when he initially had the RNY but almost 16 years later it's very specific things that he knows to avoid or pay the price. :) And yes, it is a lot of sugar.

I would definitely dump on apple juice - maybe apple cider vinegar or lemon in water is a better post RNY choice.

I would definitely try the cleanse before consenting to surgery myself.

Hello.....I am 16 years post op from a Distal Gastric Bypass. My gallbladder stoped working 10 months after my bypass. I had it removed & have had no issues with fats, carbs, etc, but each person is different.

As for the necessity of the gallbladder, I feel that once you are bypassed there is no benefit from it because your food no longer passes that are of the intestine where the gallbladder is at. The procedure is done laproscopic and I was basically good to go the next day with only minor discomfor.
