Distal RNY Experiences?
I have a distal. Bathroom issues seem typical to others (Colace is my friend). I have a hard time maintaining some labs: iron particularly. I need regular iron infusions, however, I truly do not think that is distal related. I think some of us just can not tolerate large doses of iron supplementation or process oral iron very well.
I didn't have a choice in receiving a distal, so I do not have any regrets. I willingly selected RNY. However, if you are thinking distal will allow you to eat more or will prevent regain, you will be disappointed. I do not know the impact of stoma/pouch "tightening," but the rules for distal are identical to proximal: protein forward, limit carbs. Otherwise, you will find regain is just as common as it is for proximal RNYers, DSers, etc. I personally would not undergo a revision just for a distal, as it all comes down to food choices.
