When to start fruits and vegetables
I'll be 6 years out this summer. I might start some then.
Bah. Who am I kidding.
6'3" tall, male.
Highest weight was 475. RNY on 08/21/12. Current weight: 198.

I did not have any veggies, except those in soup during puree phase, for 6 months. At nearly 1 year I still only eat about 1oz per day and raw veggies are rare. There's just no room when you focus on the protein, protein, protein!

Fruits? Berries are kinda ok. But fruit does have sugar which is sorta like kryptonite to us.
Soft veggies like roasted zucchini, yellow squash, eggplant etc... I ate those at a couple of months out.
If you are eating your protein, you most likely won't have room for veggies and fruit has more sugar than you need.

I'm almost a year out from surgery and have room for perhaps one Tablespoon of cooked veggie per day. Just really not much room left for veggies, since I'm focusing on getting protein into my body.
My family loves fruit so I do buy a lot of fresh fruit and there is always plenty in our house. Will occasoinally eat grapes, apples slices or berries -- maybe an ounce or two, once or twice a week. I never drink fruit juice ... too much sugar.
About three months out from surgery, I was just dying for a taste of roasted brussel sprouts drizzled with balsamic vinegar. (I realize now it was the dreaded head hunger I was feeling). They were really well cooked and I chewed them thoroughly. Unfortunately, I got incredibly sick within a matter of minutes - developed a terrible case of the "foamies" and endured really intense belly pain for most of that night. NEVER.DID.THAT.AGAIN!!
I'd go with the surgeons advice & wait the 3 months. You'd be far enough along in healing to start eating well cooked soft vegetables by then.
Fruit should be last on your list of foods to eat. I don't know if you'd experience rh or dumping but I heard it's horrible. Best to at least avoid the fruit which is mostly sugar. If you must have it, eat it sparingly & choose the kind on the low side of the glycemic index, like berries. When you're at goal & well into maintenance maybe experiment further up the scale.
