My take: A ticker shows off progress-- how hard I've worked, how far I've come. The number at the "goal" end is just a number, and the person posting it has attached no value of "better than you" to it.

I absolutely agree.
However, why do you use a weight ticker then? In the end it's the same kind of bragging you criticize in your post.
It's really not the same at all. No one's ticker says that someone else's size is disgusting.
6'3" tall, male.
Highest weight was 475. RNY on 08/21/12. Current weight: 198.
