Update on low iron and met with hematologist

Hi,

I lucked out. Met with a great hematologist about my low iron. Immediately scheduled me for iron infusion for Friday this week. Fecal occult negative so no gastro bleeding. Thankful I didn't have to push for iron. Basically he said that he thought I would need regular infusion. He also said that he did not think taking the prescription iron would help me much and said I should stop taking it because the three time a day iron I am taking is actually making my stomach worse with gastritis and some reflux.

I'm so glad your hematologist is on top of things. Hopefullly you'll feel better once your levels come up.

Have you had infusions before? Only asking because I just had them a month ago and while I feel amazing I was not prepared for the bills that total over 2K even with insurance. I hate Cigna.

Ugh that stinks

HI, My out of pocket is exhausted, so that is why I am pushing for this year. Next year, out of pocket is $2500. My insurance is through my hubby and is pretty good Cigna PPO plan. I am aware that iron is expensive!!

I am so glad that you are getting infusions. When I had them several years ago, they really helped and my ferritin stayed up for quite a while.

yay i really like mine also - i started seeing him even before RNY the summer before when i was prepping as I have a genetic blood disease which causes anemia and was concerned long term about rny. he said i would need iron infusions so i was prepped.

hematologists are great, and good ones are even better. sounds like you've found yourself a keeper. I too will be having infusions for the rest of my life (unless they find a way to build a better mousetrap) due to pernicious anemia.

It's a pain to deal with infusions but you will just feel so much better when your iron is back up. =)

After infusion, I felt like I wanted to run everywhere. Unbelievable energy surge.

1. Curious if you had any signs of low iron? If so, what were they? 2. How did the iron infusion go and did you feel different right away? 3. What kind of iron supplement will you switching to? 4. Any advice?
