Disappointing 8-month surgeon's visit

I just had to share that I had my 8-month appointment with my surgeon today and was very disappointed with him and the nutritionist. I had lost 6 pounds since my last visit, and I am now at my personal goal. He spent the whole visit lecturing me for losing too much weight. He says that I'm not eating enough and he in fact told me to gain 10 pounds to be healthy. I explained that I am proud to be in the Normal BMI range and that all of my comorbidities are gone. I feel great and I feel good about the way I look. He was adamant that I shouldn't have lost so much weight and that he wants me to regain. I am so disappointed with him and his reaction to my accomplishment.

I agree that it is time to change to a maintenance diet rather than trying to keep losing, but I have no intention of trying to regain weight. I know that he has more experience than I do, but I think that he is wrong.

After I was done talking to him, I had a short session with his nutritionist and she agreed that I need to increase my calories. She wants me to eat alot more carbs, including foods like rice and bread that I am not comfortable adding back into my diet. Carbs are a real slippery slope for me and while I already eat lots of non-starchy veg and the occasional piece of fruit, I am very cautious about intentionally adding too many carbs. I'm not completely surprised about her instructions, but I know myself and how my body reacts. I want to be healthy and a healthy weight, and I feel like that is true already.

Thanks for letting me rant! It's just been a frustrating day!

Sorry you had a rough visit. Hang in there, in my opinion you should continue to do what feels right to you.

you are right to stay the course. As long as you are at a normal BMI you are good.

Nearly everyone has some bounce back weight gain around year three. You will be ready for that without overgaining if you continue on the plan that works for you.

Surgeons are cutters, they know next to nothing about nutrition especially after wls. Nutritionists are actually worse in the way of knowing how to treat. Wls ppl. They don't even have any training, usually. Anyone can say they are a nutritionist.

you are correct and wise to stay away from the carbs forever, they are not your friend, not now and not ever.

hang in there. Youu have done great.

I wish I had ranted about my last surgeon visit.... I weighed 194( SW 371+) and he asked me what my goal was....140...he YELLED at me that NO that was too low he wanted me at 180 (my sister died in the early 1980's from wls)...why would I want to stop there! This was a very hard surgery for me to do....it really preyed on my mind....so I guess I gave up....lost faith in my personal goal... so over the next10-12 years I regained 100+ pounds... I am losing my regain now ...after I lose down past the 194 mark and past his 180 mark I'm going to decide where I comfortable and feel healthy...I'm not sure what the number will be BUT I am my own best expert. You are your best expert...like you said you know yourself...listen to you. Also one of my worst RH episodes happened after rice... the same for plugging my stomach....yuk.....you did not rant enough....white food(pasta, rice, potatoes, bread, sugar etc.) is dangerous for us....you take care...and know that you are a wonderful example of the success I plan on finally reaching....

Sorry to hear about your sister. That must have been incredibly rough to make the decision to have weight loss surgery yourself.

Wow...just...wow. Did you ask them what they base their recommendation on? Why is a normal BMI a problem? I just had my 9-month visit and my BMI is about 20.5. They asked if I was feeling well and happy with myself. I told them I was. She said that the 'ideal outcome for my surgery was 30lbs ago, but as long as I was happy & healthy she was happy'.

The surgeon believes that I have about 10 pounds of lose skin so I shouldn't count that as weight that I need to lose. I still believe that being at a BMI of 24 for my height is a good number not a bad thing.

Hm. I don't know about having 10lbs of loose skin either. I have lost 150lbs total and the PS said I have maybe 1 1/2-2lbs of loose skin.

Skin doesn't weigh a lot LBL, arms and legs and my total was 6.5. Day of my lower body lift it looked like 30-40lbs I needed to lose. It was 4.5. All skin no fat according to the Doc.
