Will I be able to eat this?
Hi, Everyone! I have been doing a lot of research on post-op diet for RNY and I came across some information that surprised me. I was expecting that a few months after surgery, I would be able to eat healthy food like fruit, veggies, seeds and nuts. But I have read aome articles that say certain items just cannot be tolerated after RNY.
Can you please tell me if you are able to eat:
-Pistachios
-Almonds
-Cashews
-Sunflower Seeds
-Watermelon
-Grapes
-Cherry Tomatoes
-Cucumber
-Celery
-Blueberries
-Raspberries
-Strawberries
I understand that it is most important to get protein in first, but I also thought I would be able to eventually eat small amounts of the healthy foods I listed above. Are these off limits forever?

This will vary from person to person. Tolerances, or lack there of, are very individual. And when you can resume eating them varies too.
i don't eat almonds, pistachios, sunflower seeds or blueberries or celery cause I don't like them. Nothing about my rny prevents me from eating them.
I eat everything else on your list, randomly not regularly. (Except for raspberries, I can't live without those!)

I've eaten all of those things and been just fine - with the exception of the celery. I hate celery so haven't tried it (unless it's in my mom's thanksgiving stuffing, lol).
Honestly most people can eat anything they want once they get past the healing stages. Sometimes there are one or two specific foods that give us trouble but many longer term postops can eat whatever they want.
for a lot of people it's just the first few months. Raw vegetables and seeds can be hard on a healing stomach. I've been eating all those things since about six months out. Some people do have tolerance issues, but then, some of us don't. But those foods aren't dangerous or anything after your stomach has healed.
While I don't eat much fruit, I've eaten all on your list. No issues. Oddly I only have issues with dryer meats. I get stuck if they aren't toddler cut. Otherwise I'm good.

I have eaten all of these foods. I didn't start eating nuts and seeds until I hit maintenance as they are higher calorie low protein.
I still find raw veggie**** or miss... cooked is fine.

I am 8 months out and have had most of these foods. The seeds in these foods can be difficult to process at first, but after a few months you may not have any problems. The nuts and fruit can be slider foods and I eat very little fruit. The nuts are pretty high in fat and low in protein, so they aren't the best choice either even though I can eat them. I eat mostly dense protein and non-starchy veggies.
