I'm a little over a week post-op (RNY 10/05/17) and still in phase I of my post-op diet, and I'm having an extremely difficult time trying to reach my protein goals...I just get so full sipping my shakes and water, that I'm trying to rush to reach my 80-90grams later in the evening...any suggestions that could help me?

(side note - I was admitted into the hospital three days after my surgery, so I couldn't have anything to drink for three days...I just restarted phase I this past thursday - 10/12/17)

Your protein goal seems high for being a new post op. 60g was my minimum, 80-90 is what I do now.

Personally, if I were making 75% of the daily goal, I'd be easy in myself and try and build on it each day.

My surgeon said the biggest problem he saw for newly post op patients is dehydration. He was more concerned about me staying hydrated than meeting the protein goal for the first few weeks. It gets easier, you'll get there.

I added some unflavored protein powder to my shakes and soft foods. On top of the normal portion of Syntrax I drank. Made it easier to meet the goal

Echoing that my goal was 60 early on. And protein shakes count toward your liquid ounce goal, so my surgeon wanted me to start with them as it met two goals with one drink.

Also, start early. I would get up at 6am (much earlier than I had to get up) and just start sipping shakes. The more you get in early, the less pressure you'll feel on yourself late in the day.

Do not stress you are just so early out being hydrated is really impt right now. I was hospitalized for dehydration early on. Its no fun. Just get your fluids in and try not to focus on the protein to much. Yes you need it but i am sure that my dr had me on 60 grams at your stage good luck

As Peach said the most important thing is the fluids, the protein will come. You are still early out. No worries.

Thanks for all the advice! I saw my surgeon today for my post-op, and she says I was doing fine, so now I'm advanced to thick liquids and puréed foods...hopefully I'll do well with that! Thanks again ??
