Egg-

I love the cookies but have a hard time keeping them good after they first come out of the oven, so if I don't eat it all right then(and I don't really want to) they are kinda chewy and icky.

Tips?

Airtight container... or ziplock.

You can always toss them back in the oven too.

I think part of the decision is where you are on your journey. I always carried protein bars in a ziplock sandwich bag, so I would only eat, half, I could save the other half in the beginning. Being further out now, I probably should still eat half, but I don't.

I get more than enough protein from real food, so I am a little more lax in maintenance about the 10g of protein for 100 calorie rule. I am all about texture, so quest isn't my favorite. Although the s'mores quest is one of my favorites if I had one. I like the Power Crunch because of the flavor and texture and it is lower carb than many of them. Unfortunately it can be a little too tasty.

It is really trial and error as to taste. Watch the calories too, because some of them can be very high calorie.

If the Sugar Alcohols in that particular bar aren't bothering you, than don't worry about it.

I love protein bars -- too much. I didn't have one until over a year out when I went on vacation. That opened the flood gates. My current favourite is the Pure Protein in chocolate deluxe flavour. I can get them at Walmart for a somewhat reasonable price and that flavour doesn't have as many sugar alcohols so generally my pouch is okay with them. I love Quest bars, especially because of all the flavours, but most give me a stomach ache. The last one that I have been eating lately is Muscle Pharm. They have more regular sugar (5g -- so still okay-ish), but almost no sugar alcohols. My pouch is better able to handle something with 5g of regular sugar that 5g of sugar alcohols. Any more than that and DH will kick me out of the house from the smell

I don't use them as a meal or snack source generally, partly because they are just another processed food - and I already enjoy the convenience of a whey protein isolate shake, another highly processed food, pretty much daily. They're handy, but not ideal compared to real food sourced protein. The NUT didn't have a problem with me eating them, but mirrored my thoughts to keep it to a minimum. "Good in a pinch" were her words. If I know I'll be out for the day (recent out-of-town training courses, for example), I will pack one in a ziploc so I can split it into two 100 calorie snacks or, if need be, one whole one for a meal (but that's only happened once). The NUT said as long as I used the 10:1 rule I'd be OK. Find one with a 10:1 ratio of calories to protein, and don't bother with the rest. The Pure Protein ones from Costco are the best tasting (though really chewy) I've found which meets this requirement. Depending on the flavour, I think they were 180-200 calories and 20g protein and over. I have observed that there are a ton of them that are 200-300 calories but only deliver 10-15g or so of protein. That puts it out of the "ratio" (usually because they have more sugar than others) and I leave them on the shelf.

That works for me.

I just discovered the Epic bars which are essentially a jerky in bar form. The Chicken Sriracha ones are 100% natural chicken, 15g protein, & 100 calories. They are also flavorful, sugar and sugar-alcohol free, and don't give me the chocolate cravings that I can get from a regular protein bar.

Check out Caveman chicken bars. Perfect profile other than sodium and no alcohols. I keep it in the car on driving trips. Better than jerky imho. I also like quest bars. To me they arent candy bars. I barely can eat one and Im not dreaming of another. I understand the concerns with the candy-like off profile chocolate covered bars but not a quest bar.

I go to GNC and get Ostrim jerky sticks. They are AMAZING! Especially the buffalo ones. 80 calories and 14 grams of protein.

I have been eating one almost every day because my doctor has been getting on me about not eating and my low(ish) protein counts...
