1 week follow up

Primary doctor took me off the sliding scale insulin and doesn't want to restart any of the diabetic medications at this time!!!! Nutritionest wants me to start to move to tuna, mashed potatoes, and green beans. Pain on my right side surgeon believes it is the stitch and possibly hematoma on my muscle but he isn't worried. All in all good news, even though I feel like its to soon to advance with only being a week and 2 days out from surgery.

Wow.. tuna already? I can understand the mashed potatoes but green beans and tuna? I couldn't even fathom eating those until after 5 weeks.

That was my reaction too! I'm so nervous and I feel like I'm advancing to fast!

More advice from me, hope you don't mind. I got really light-headed (has to do with the straight carbs for me) when I tried regular mashed potatoes so my NUT suggested sweet potatoes and I had no issues with those.

I don't mind the advice, keep it coming, did you ever try instant potatoes? And did you ever put gravy or butter on them?

I don't remember trying instant and I did put a small amount of butter but no gravy. I think I got light-headed because it was all I ate (no protein). I did much better with refried beans and that sort of thing.

I had my surgery on a Wed. On the following Monday I was cleared for tuna, went straight to the subway in the bariatric center's building and ate it too fast. OUCH!!! but aside from speed eating it - I did great on canned meats that first week. They gave me a ton more energy than the liquid diet was providing. I also returned to work that same day...

I did, and I have no idea what kind of mayo Subway uses to mix into the tuna, but the NUT gave me the go-ahead. She and the doctor said they found that patients did better moving more quickly to thicker, more protein dense foods, as these foods stay in the pouch longer, and seem to provide recovering patients more energy than the liquid phase. I didn't ask too many questions or argue. I was feeling sluggish and really wanted to get to the office and get to work.
