Researching Vitamins
Hello everyone! I had my nut appointment today. I dropped another 4 lbs. Since I am now down to my last two insurance requirements I have been researching vitamins. I would like to get a stock pile going before I have my surgery. I am on disability so money is tight. I thought the vitamin Patch might be good to going with or a liquid multi-vitamin. I checked out Bariatric Advantage, Celebrate, and Walgreens Optisource. Nut is recommending straight Bariatric Vitamin to start off with after surgery. All opinions are welcome!
For me the bariatric advantage was the easiest way. You can sign up for recurring order and they send it to you every 30-60-90 days (your choice). I wanted to get something that was specifically for bariatric surgery, especially with malabsorption issues. I get my multi vitamin and calcium from them. The chewy (like starburst) ones are yum.

Post op I did chewables, from vitamin shoppe.
Now I buy my multi and calcium from BJ's or cvs. Iron I've started on the patch.
My team never required a bariatric specific vitamin- but did give me an outline of what needed to be IN the multi.

HI,
I wouldn't load up on a ton of vitamins. Thats what I did and it backfired since a lot of the chewable vitamins have sugar alcohol which puts my stomach in an uproar and i had to return them to the suppliers. Same thing applies to protein powders.
Until you know what your stomach can handle, don't commit to lots of products!
I have a prescription B12 Nascobal spray and I just ordered a 6 month supply of Opurity vitamins from unjury.com . I still need chewable vitamins. Cant swallow big pills at 2 1/2 months post op.

I get most of my vitamins on sale at CVS or Walgreens. I am 9 years out and except for iron, my labs have always been good using inexpensive vitamins.

Some people need a chewable or liquid vitamin for the first few weeks after surgery. But after that, you can use regular vitamin pills! I swallowed normal pills (split in half) starting the day I got home from the hospital.
The ASMBS recommends 200% RDA for all vitamins and minerals in your supplements. You can usually get that by taking a double dose of a regular adult multivitamin. I take the Walgreen's generic version of Centrum for seniors and it meets my basic needs. They often do BOGO free sales, so they're very affordable!

I filled out a paper my dietitian gave and my insurance pays for it. I met my deductable so I don't have to pay copay right now. It's considered a premium medicine so I think with my insurance it will be $15 to $20 each. I use Bari- Activ Iron and vitamin c, Bari-Activ multivitamin, Bari-Activ Calcium and D3 and Magnesium also Nascobal Nasal Spray. The company name is Nutrition Direct. They send it to me every month.
