Oh my goodness, Rosemi, you've NEVER seen a firefly? Yes, you HAVE to put that on your bucket list! They are SO gorgeous! Like a field full of tiny stars twinkling in the night! We also call them lightning bugs.

My brother and I used to pull their butts off and "paint" our faces with them.

In retrospect, that was cruel and gross!

I've heard of people doing that before, but I never did it. We used to catch them and put them in jars with holes in the lids and go to sleep watching them twinkle and flash but in the morning they would usually be dead, so I guess that was pretty cruel.

So I looked up fireflies and it turns out they are actually a beetle! So I. Guess that means you two little ones were smearing your faces with beetle buttjuice ..ok you're right ...gross and

Lol yes, with the hindsight and wisdom of over 20 years since these events, we were little barbarians with faces full of beetle butt juice. We called it war paint in those days though!

I saw my first ever firefly this summer in our backyard and I had no idea what it was. DH pointed it out and I think I stared at it for about an hour watching it blink on and off.

I adore fireflies! Where I grew up, there is a beautiful national wildlife refuge called the Great Swamp. Driving through it at night, I would pass a deep field ringed by woods. In the center of the field stood a large lone tree with curving branches and a wide canopy. Sometimes during the summer that tree would be positively alight with what must have been thousands of fireflies! It was a spectacularly magical sight. I miss that entire area much more than I ever thought I would.

It was an amazing sight! Yet strangely fickle - The very next night, the tree could be dark...it was true and rare luck to see them!
