Protein powder and gas

I have a lot of gas (flatulence) when using protein powder, I was wondering is this from all protein or just some, do you have any suggestions for ones that don't have this effect? Thanks

TMI alert.

I have gas ALL THE TIME and I think it's more the high protein/low carb thing overall than any specific source. Naturally I make it a game with my kids, who laugh their heads off (they're young, so Dad farts are funny). I wonder too though if it's because of frequent constipation (in my case)?

As gramps always says as he's gotten older (he just turned 92)..."Never trust a fart".

A lot of people get lactose intolerance after surgery, so it could be that. Some powders have sugar alcohols, and that will definitely do it.

Is your powder 100 percent whey protein isolate?

Thank you, I just read the label and did not realize there was milk in it since I use unflavored and mix with water did not consider that. And it is whey concentrate not 100% isolate, any suggestions for a different one? Thanks Grim

Hi, I posted about this recently. My thought is i the toxic gas is from malabsorption and lactose intolerance and sugar alcohol intolerance. You may be better off finding one without sugar alcohols and taking a lactaid since some people react to the whey. If it is the sugar alcohols, they cause a lot of problems.

Someone was talking about being whey protein intolerant the other day.

In my case, the gas is from constipation and eating veggies like cabbage.

I found that my bariatric vitamins were sweetened with sugar alcohols. I stopped using that brand and solved the problem. Check labels with ingredients ending in -itol

Whey protein is pretty low in lactose, so I would look to the sweeteners before you swear off the whey protein. Try incorporating some yogurt too as you cultivate a new type of gut flora!

Sounds like lactose intolerance. Check the label of your protein powder. If it contains whey concentrate, it is loaded with lactose. Whey isolate is 99% lactose free. Look for a protein that only has whey isolate in it. Mix it with water, almond milk, or my favorite, cashew milk.

I suffered for several months before I figured out that I was lactose intolerant and my protein was making me sick. I can still eat Greek yogurt and cheese but milk sends me running for the bathroom.

It could be sugar alcohols too. Any artificial sweetener that ends with 'itol' (like malitol, sorbitol, etc.) will cause gastric distress.
