Food addiction - podcast episode
hi everyone, a CBC show did an episode exploring food addiction. It's not very in depth, but I wanted to share it. There's a lot of back and forth over whether food can be addictive, or not.
I get that there is a medical definition of addictive substance that food might not meet.
But there is zero doubt in my mind that I have addictive tendencies to certain foods.
And why the "everything in moderation" mantra doesn't work for me.
There are just some things I know I can't have "just one" of.
In the podcast, they mentioned the Yale food addiction scale. I just tried answering it as I would have, pre op and I was pretty much daily on every question.
Just wanted to share, as it never occurred to me until I was serious about surgery to look at my weight problem as a medical condition, rather than a moral failing. Obviously, not everyone is a food addict, just like not everyone has binge eating disorder, a metabolic condition, etc.

-You aren't alone, jus****ch me get near cheetos, fritos, doritos, baked potato with sour cream, butter and pepper maybe bacon on it too, sushi, white rice with pesto, risotto, mac and cheese, crackers (especially the onion flavored ones), wheat thins and I can go on and on. Even yogurt!!!
Basically I have to limit myself to the perimeter of the grocery store. I dont want the candy, I want all that other weird ****junk food that mascarades as "real food" and gives me a false sense of "eating well" and righteousness.
So-I do believe in addiction. I have NEVER binged on hard boiled eggs, I have had the urge to throw down 2 snack sized/vending machine bags of cheetos...and that little bag is FOUR SERVINGS.

I totally agree, with you. There are certain things I CANNOT leave alone, if they are available to me. PERIOD.
People talk about not being trusted with a jar of peanut butter. I have thrown away FULL jars, of PB *gasp*, because it got old and weird smelling...PB not my thing...I won't NAME my "things", since it may trigger an "attack", for others...and ME...but there are things I absolutely would walk thru fire, for, and wouldn't stop until ALL of it was GONE GONE GONE...then I would feel guilty/ugly/fat/stupid/weak
THANK YOU, for sharing this
Dr. Connie Stapleton speaks on this, a lot. She is one of my favorite peeps, in the universe

".I won't NAME my "things", since it may trigger an "attack", for others...and ME.."
-This is an excellent point. When I listed my THINGS I did not stop to think they could trigger an attack in others.
Thank you for pointing this out.
