I'm new here, I had my first appointment (info session) in Toronto hospital, I want to know if anybody can tell me which surgery is safer, and also, I currently go to the gym 5 days a week and weigh 500lbs will this surgery make me lose to much weight with current gym activities, also will I be able to take workout product like BCAA, pre workout powders, etc after any of these surgeries

Both surgeries are safe, but any surgery has risks. With your starting weight most would recommend RNY (or even DS), but many have been successful with losing large amounts with VSG too.

No, you won't lose too much weight- with either surgery. Are you losing weight now going to the gym 5-days a week? Working out isn't necessary to lose- but Will certainly help and has countless health benefits.

Post op you will need to whey protein-- I'm not familiar with the powder named. I work out consistently and never found need for any powders etc, I get my nutrients from food.

I'm not losing much weight working out because my food habits are bad. I eat the right things for a couple of days then start eating the bad things a couple of days and you know the saying 'you can't out work a bad diet"

If you are going through the Ontario system, you likely will have no choice. They do RNYs almost exclusively, unless your medical team decides it would be unsafe and they can only do VSG. I've heard of only a couple of people who were able to get a DS.

If you are self-pay, it's another story.

So Ontario tells you that you must do the bypass surgery, why is that

RNY had been done in much larger number, for much longer. Even here in the states, insurance companies didn't cover VSG for a long time, and considered it experimental.

Howdy,

I am a revision from sleeve to RNY. Both surgeries could potentially make you lactose intolerant. I have not done well with any of the whey proteins but I suspect it is because most protein shakes have some form of fake sugars which I am highly sensitive to and had to switch to plain whey protein and take a lactaid.

That being said, the RNY is much more restrictive because of the malabsorption, no sugarsetc and at such a high BMI (mine was 55 when I started, you may do better with a RNY if you are a sugar addict since some of us cannot tolerate it and it can cause dumping.

I'm in Ontario and was told my BMI wasn't high enough for a Sleeve, so they gave me RNY. I don't know the reasoning behind that because I think RNY would be better for a higher weight, although a lot of people have lost lots of weight with the Sleeve. Maybe in Ontario they look at the Sleeve as a first surgery, that can later be revised to RNY? I'm not sure.

I had RNY 7 months ago and am totally happy with it. I don't know if I dump because I haven't eaten anything I shouldn't, but part of the reason why I haven't is to avoid the possibility of dumping, so it helped that way (I had a crazy sweet tooth and sugar addiction pre op).

My surgeon had way more experience with RNY than the Sleeve, so i felt safer with the RNY.

So if your BMI is high enough they recommend the sleeve, or is it in ontario doctors have done more RNY then sleeve operations,
