No Post-Op Issues?

Hello all,

I had laparoscopic bypass surgery on 8/21/17 and am somewhat concerned that I have had zero instances of nausea and minimal of what I would call "internal" pain. I hate to put this out there because I know many of you are suffering. I guess my concern is derived from the fact that nausea and stomach pains are somewhat normal with this surgery. I'm eating soft scrambled eggs, mashed up peas and beans and just about anything soft (no meat unless pureed).

Has anyone else experienced this? Did my surgeon poke 6 holes in my stomach then sew tape me back up?

Thanks in advance.

Nope, you're just doing it right. A lot of times folks who experience distress are either trying to rush back into regular foods, not staying hydrated or testing their limits. I didn't have a whole lot of pain either and the one time I threw up was when I tried to eat an egg on top of some soup and just put too much in there. Keep on doing what you're doing and proceed with caution and you'll do fine. :D

If you go back and read Scott's posts he had the same thing to say at your stage. Actually quite a few have. I would take it easy on the peas as they aren't giving you any nutritional value for the space they occupy. Peas also have a lot of sugar.

I find it interesting that the ones that have had the stomach pains wish they could stop having them and the people who haven't had them are concerned that they haven't had any pain.

There really isn't any normal type of recovery after this surgery. Recovery phase can be all the way from "did I really have surgery" to "OMGosh I am dying" and everything in between.

Congrats on getting through this so easily!

Ceci,

Thank you for the information. How might I find what Scott said at this stage? TIA.

I didn't have a single post-op problem. I moved through the phases and can tolerate (and could back then) anything.

We are the lucky ones, sort of. You might wish you couldn't tolerate some things before too long!

I didn't have any problems, either. In fact, I was a little worried at first that they hadn't really done the surgery!

Ditto! I remember bringing it up at my local support group and them saying....jokingly of course...that I could go and try and eat a whopper and some fries and then I would know for sure that things were different in there.

I had open RNY, and my surgeon's food plan was very progressive (purees Day 2 and soft foods (2 bites of scrambled eggs on the third day post-op (I was in hospital until morning of Day 4), and eating tuna and chicken week 2, and I never had a single problem early out. No pain other than from the incision, no vomiting, no nausea, no problems drinking (except that I didn't really want to).

Keep in mind that people who have problems will post about their issues, whereas people who don't have issues don't generally post just to say "3 weeks out and all is well", so it often seems like more people have problems than really do. Most people do just fine post-op.

Thank you all, especially those of you that have experienced no issues whatsoever as I have.

As mentioned, I think about eating a big hamburger to make myself nauseous and prove to myself that the surgeon really did something in there! Just kidding of course.

Also as mentioned, since I had no issues with nausea, I progressed into full liquids, pureed and soft foods sooner than the doctor ordered.

My heart goes out to those of you that are having issues. Nausea and pain are not something I'd wish on anyone.
