Question about surgical clip removal
on 9/1/17 5:04 pm
Hi there, I was just approved for rygb surgery today by Dr. Jules in Guelph and I just noticed in the pamphlets I was given that the bariatic clinic will take out your surgical clips if your family physician refuses to. My question is what are surgical clips and why would your family Dr refuse to take them out? This wasn't mentioned during my meeting with Dr Jules and I'm just confused as to why I would have surgical clips that would need to be removed after surgery. Btw, my surgery date is October 3rd. I am so excited!!

they are skin staples that hold the edges of your incision together for 10 days until the edges grow back together.
Some family physicians won't take them out because they didn't put them in. In that case you would return to your surgeon for removal, with a special skin staple remover.

Ahhhh, thanks for the reply. I was wondering what the heck clips were!!thanks again!!
Hi dragonk,
I'm not sure that all the surgeons at Guelph use staples... I know Dr. Reed did with mine, but some just use steri-strips. The nurses might know which he uses. As someone else mentioned there is a little tool thing that they use to pop out the staples. If you can go back to Guelph to get them out I would strongly recommend that... My family doc wasn't used to removing staples and a couple pinched which isn't the most pleasant feeling.

Congrats on your surgery date; so exciting!
I didn't have staples; my surgeon used stitches that self dissolved. My family doctor just checked them to make sure the incisions weren't getting infected, and they were fine.
