Once you are further out from surgery, My Doc will allow predisone if needed, but you need to take a PPI.

As it is muscle related- For a muscle relaxer I have found Valium 5mg works well. Not a pain killer per se but it helps too.

OK. i WENT to urgent care. Not broken but foot and leg messed up in all different areas. sprain strains contusions lots of swelling. ankle sprain, achilles tendon, leg just a lot. Severe pain. They wanted to give me toradal to get me through the xrays but I clled my surgeon's office nd spoke to the Dr on call. She nixed that. I brought the old pills from 12/15 and she said to go ahead and take that since even though it was old. I had 2 yesterday and think I am in front of the pain. The dr. prescribed percaset. Can we take that if I need it?

Percoset is a strong opiate. My pouch just don't tolerate it, even with food. So watch for irritation, and take with food. Surprisingly I tolerate narco just fine.

I always try to use the least of pain pill like opiates. I often beat the pill in half, or 1/4 add an extra Tylenol, and hope for the best. Even with severe chronic back pain - most of the time 1/2 is more than enough. Tylenol is supposed to increase the potency of the opiates, and with narco - I can take 1/2 of one and add extra Tylenol.

Narco have only 325,mg of Tylenol, so 1/2 is even less. So I very seldom have a problem with even getting close to my Tylenol personal limit of no more than 3000 mg a day (that is my personal limit - my liver does not like more than that)

FYI: any pain pills will also affect your pouch - feeling it getting damaged. So the damage can be happening - like with Percocet- but you may not feel the burning or pain until you stop taking the meds. (Talking from experience - unfortunately) Any pain pills would do that. That's why taking NSAIDs can be so dangerous. It may be burning a hole in your pouch, but you may not even feel it.

As others suggested: ice and some compression. Elevation of the leg. Massaging. Or Tense units. They work so good. Ice and elevate your leg to drain the fluids, ice and heat, but always finishing with ice.

More expensive options: professional massage, limphatic massage, infra-red treatment, and acupuncture. Acupuncture works wonder for me. Not only that can work on the inflammation itself, but also helps promote healing of the damaged tissue. Like really does. Injuries I was told are difficult to heal without surgery (confirmed by MRI or ct-scans) were fixed without surgical intervention for me. Not all - but enough over the last 15 years.

H.A.L.A.B. can we take robaxin (sp?). For severe pain I sometimes take a norco + a robaxin. Sometimes, I can make do with only taking a robaxin. It sounds like with the OP's injury, the robaxin might help a little and keep her from having to go to an opiod? But would a muscle relaxant kill her pouch?

if you tolerate them - why not?

but- for me, I have problem with constipation. Add narco AND muscle relaxers and I stop going. Plus I have low BP and orthostatic hypotension, so additional muscle relaxers can be making that worse. Watch for that as you will be losing weight.

Oh crap with OH. I hadn't considered that could become a prob! As for the constipation LOL, I deal with that whether or not I take norco or methacarbamol (robaxin). LOL. Psyllium husks and MOM are my besties. But I try not to take either, anyway.

Wow ! This may be a know- nothing's opinion because I've been lucky enough to be totally pain and injury free forever but if I do overdo the construction activities ( and I do work alongside and harder than the boys to properly inspire them ( it works) ) and aggravate a long ago back overuse injury I cook fresh ginger (a natural anti inflammatory) in my tea , try to eat more garlic and onion ( again anti inflammatories ) and even buy and consume fresh turmeric root if it's available .

If all else fails I'll take an over the counter pain reliever and get a good nights sleep .

(((()))))) hugs good luck
