Iron supplement making me nauseous (at least that is what I think is causing it) any advice?

It may be your morning dose. I know when I was taking oral supplements, I had to take it as I was going to bed or I would actually throw them up. If I took it right before bed, I could fall asleep and feel fine in the morning. I eliminated that problem by switching to the iron patch. Since it doesn't go through your GI tract, there are no issues with nausea. I'm hoping that since my levels are still good the patch will continue to work for me.

I know this is likely not helpful since you have to take 2 doses and they have to be split up. I'll keep my fingers crossed that you can drop down to 1x a day. Then the nighttime dose should solve your problem

Because of the nausea and horrible cramps - I had a very hard time to take them and keep down any iron. and in 2 months my numbers dropped even lower. My hema told me not to bother with oral iron. That apparently I can't absorb enough and the side effects could cause more internal damage, than help my iron.

Yikes, I wonder what my blood work will show when they test it again.

Ferrous sulfate, ferrous gluconate, and anything with ferrous in the name will cause stomach upset and diarrhea.

Heme iron is the best oral iron for being absorbed and not creating issues. Carbonyl is next, and much cheaper than heme iron. Many people have great results with iron patches.

Make sure you take extra Vitamin C to help absorb iron. 200 mg of C for every 30 mg of iron. And keep iron 2 hours from calcium, dairy, coffee, tea, soy, etc.

Thank you! I will look for another kind of iron, I didn't know I should increase the vit C too, I do have the timing spaced out with that at my calcium. I am afraid that I am going through taking the oral and will still end up with needing an infusion. My #'s were Iron total 26 L/ Iron binding 522 H/ % saturation 5 L/ Hemoglobin 9.9 L/ Ferritin 6L/ White blood cell count 3.53L/ Red bllod cell count 3.53L.....

with that iron numbers - you need infusion, NOW.

Like - immediately.

Then you can try to maintain good numbers with oral.

How can you exercise and run with those number?

With little better numbers I was wiped down trying to walk upstairs.

On month after my iron infusions - I was hiking in Colorado -over 10,000+ feet.

My friend who lives there had problem keeping up with me. Before the infusions- at home - almost see level-I had a hard time walking a mile.

When I talked to the nurse she said she has seen people with better numbers totally zonked of energy and ones with lower that were not symptomatic at all. I think some other things I deal with (leg cramps/being light headed) might be from the low iron but I just assumed they were from other causes.
