Fear of throwing up!
9 months post op. No throw up. Pain was moderate and manageable for about a week before it cleared. Foamies a few times when I eat too fast or too much. I more feared the diarrhea potential and that has been minimal and manageable as well. Overall my fears never materialized. Good luck

I just had my surgery on July 28th. I'm allergic to penicillin family of antibiotics so they gave me vancomycin before the surgery. It didn't sit well and I vomited a few minutes after it was started. After my surgery I was in so much pain, had intense nausea, and was extremely drowsy (for like 2 days). It was awful. They pumped me full of morphine, fentanyl, zofran, gravol.... nothing helped. I couldn't keep even the smallest amount of water down. Dry heaving/foamies was awful. I couldn't even go for walks. I couldn't wear my CPAP. It wasn't until 48 hours later when I nearly had a breakdown to the surgery fellow (and she heard me dry heaving from the hallway) that they decided to try giving me hydromorphone. At this point I could still not keep anything down. After just one dose of hydromorphone I had a fantastic sleep and had another dose first thing in the morning. I actually got up, washed, got dressed, went for a walk, and had some water and jello. It stayed down! They had wanted to discharge me the day before but I refused. I'm glad I did! They sent me home with a hydromorphone script and all was golden. I only took it for 2 days but it was enough to get rid of the pain and the nausea. I don't know if it was a combination of the vanco, and the anesthetic that made everything awful, but all is fantastic now!

I threw up after my very first surgery, years ago, and so I asked for anti-nausea pain meds for my RNY. They gave me a patch behind my ear that I put on before surgery and kept on for a couple of days after. So I did not throw up in the hospital.
That being said, I have thrown up a number of times after surgery. 99% of the time it was MY fault. Eating too much, eating too fast, eating something I should not (bread, pasta). Only 1% of the time was it just random (I found out that falafel + my pouch = projectile sickness). That being said, I would happily throw up once a day to have had this life-saving surgery and be at a healthy weight, with energy to spare. So while it's ok to worry about it, try to come to some peace and realize that this will change your life!
And yes, drinking can be tough right after surgery, but not impossible. Some people tolerate cold drinks, some room temp, some hot. Some can easily sip 1 oz every 15 minutes, some struggle. Some people love the taste of water, some hate it. Some only like flavored water (like Crystal Light). Some can't choke down the ready to drink (RTD) shakes like Premier Protein due to their thickness, some love them. Some people prefer the clear Isopure protein drinks. Right after surgery hydration is MOST important, so you will have to do what we all did and suck it up, and sip sip sip all day. Sip water, sip chicken broth, sip protein shakes, just SIP :) You will do great!
I had surgery about 2 months ago, I was never sick to my stomach after surgery. The meds they gave me worked perfectly.

I didn't throw up at all. The pain meds made me a bit nauseated and I had an allergic reaction to the gravol they gave me to counter that, but no vomiting.
Drinking didn't make me feel nauseated at all, but I did have a lot of pain.
I've only been sick once in 6.5 months, and it wasn't vomiting, more like excessive saliva. It hasn't happened again because I'm very careful to chew my food and eat slowly.

I've thrown up a handful of times. It's way less unpleasant than it is pre-surgery, at least for me. For one thing, your stomach doesn't hold very much. For another, there's a lot less acid in there than there was before, so you don't get that awful taste in your mouth. So I wouldn't worry about it.
I had surgery on March 29th, and I haven't thrown up yet. My doc said I'm partially just lucky, and he also thinks my early and constant walking helped my digestive track. Walking helps to get your intestines moving (rippling) and that helps move things in the right direction so there is less backing up. It also just generally helps healing.
I was walking as soon as I got back to my room. I got out of bed and drug my IV out to the hallway and shuffled along, doing a loop of the floor, every hour. When I got home I set the timer on my stove and walked in little circles around my apt for 15 minutes at a time, every hour, then ventured outside and walked longer and longer (very slowly).
