What's the deal with fruit?
My NUT and Dr told me to eat both veggies and fruit daily (approx 1 1/2 cups daily total with the protein being first). I didn't start raw fruit till about 5 months out. A whole banana....never, but 2-3 small slices is good. I also eat no more than 3 blueberries a day or even a Tbl tiny chopped peach or apple. The fruit is great on triple zero yogurt and I have tolerated it very well. Eating a different fruit adds flavor and although I don't eat them daily, I do eat them at least 4-5 times per week. And yes, I'm still losing weight :) No affects from sugar. Still working out and walking.
You are still losing weight because mal-absorption lasts a year or more after surgery. You could be eating a bag of skittles a day and still lose weight this early out.
But when that stops, you will gain if you are not careful with fruit. Fruit is sugar. Some can eat more than others (and if you are lucky, you will be one of those people), but always be cognizant of the fact that fruit sugar, fructose, lactose, glucose, grains, starches, etc are still sugar.

This question is mostly for the vets. From reading the posts in the last 5-6 weeks I see most of you are opposed to fruit. My nutritionist, at the last appt, told me she wants me to have protein, veggies AND fruit. I'm not questioning her expertise but I wanted to ask those of you who have already gone through this and have been successful in losing weight and reaching goal, how much fruit do you actually eat? I've been including some raspberries and blackberries but I am hesitant. Please advise and TIA!
fruit is pure sugar. Sugar is what the body breaks down al we eat into,to be burned for energy and to keep us alive.
if you eat fruit, you are giving your body ready made sugar to use for functioning. If there is free flowing sugar in the blood stream, from eating fruit, the body will not break down stored fat to use for energy.
breaking down and using stored fat, leads to weight loss . Eating fruit very likely will slow down/ stop weight loss.
I feel like I am doing pretty good post surgery. I think as long as you watch the amount of fruit you eat you will be okay. I can't think of any fruit I don't eat....been eating a lot of seedless watermelon this summer and blueberries. Fruit is good for you and the more things (normal) that you can eat, the more comfortable you will feel eating in front of other people.
Early on no added sugar applesauce was good. That is all I remember from 9-10 years ago. I feel I am generally 'normal' in what I eat, just don't eat as many processed things and carbs as other people. Best of luck to you!
I have been eating fruit since I was cleared to very early out (not sure exactly when, but pretty soon after surgery). I eat fruit everyday - and lots of it. I've already had some blueberries, raspberries and blackberries today. Depending on how hungry I am this afternoon I also have some mango slices and cantaloupe. I also eat a lot of veggies and quite a bit of high carb non-animal protein (beans/lentils).
This definitely puts me in the minority of WLS patients, but it is all part of the nutrition plan from my surgeon and has worked very well for me. I lost over 180 lbs in 10 months and have been in maintenance for about 8 months.
Here is what I've eaten so far today:
B: 1 Cup Steel Cut Oats with 1/4 blueberries.
Snack: 2 oz blackberries, 2 oz rasberries
L: 1 cup sweet potatoes (w/butter)
1/2 can vegetarian refried beans
Spinach Salad (red peppers, onions, cucumbers) with Nutritional Yeast & Balsamic Vinegar
For dinner I will probably have some meat protein, maybe with some lentils as I'm a little low on protein for the day, but my target (again, per my surgeon) is just 60g a day, so not too hard to reach. If I'm low on protein, I tend to just add in some cottage cheese and/or nuts.
