Instant Regret

What you're going through is not abnormal - it's a normal phase for people to go through regardless of what kind of surgery they're having, especially if it's "elective." "Why did I do this?!" Some of that is the effects of the anesthesia and the medications and the pain. This is not the time to contemplate a second surgery. Wait until you're fully recovered from the first one.

And, in the meantime, I highly recommend that you find a therapist to add to your team. There are so many mental hurdles to overcome in this process and a therapist can be a very useful tool in your tool belt.

It might also be beneficial for you to research more about the VSG and RNY - they're both pretty equally drastic in their own way :)

I totally agree I contacted a therapist as soon as I got out and have a meeting this week. Honestly, I wouldn't do any other surgery than reversal to my old stomach so I can feel normal again. I have been doing tons of research over the last couple of days and am afraid of complications coming like vit deficiencies when I'm older. I have read two sources that actually claim some doctors outside the US only do RNY as a temporary procedure with a limit of 1-2 years before the procedure is reversed, that way the chances of suffering from deficiencies or complications are less.(apart from the obvious complications of a second surgery. I know I'm in panic mode so I'm goggling 1000 different possibilities but you all are right and I will sit this through and see what the future holds for me.

Believe me, YOU are the person who will determine if you have deficiencies. Get your lab results, learn what they mean, take your vitamins and you'll be fine. If you don't know how to do it, ask here, lots of us are veterans and probably know as much, if not more than most bariatric surgeons. OH is a great resource

I'm the furthest out and the healthiest RNY my PCP has because I take responsibility for my health!

I don't know what sources claim that doctors do RNY as a temporary measure, and then reverse it. But that is total crap. Complete, total BS.

Reversals are extremely rare, and only get done as an extreme measure for something that can't be fixed any other way.

Having additional revisions to yourRNY, reversal or not, will be the SOURCE of complications, not the cure.

Take your supplements. Have complete labs drawn yearly, and adjust supplements as needed, and you'll do just fine.

Objectively you are not thinking rationally. I hope that your therapist is able to help you. As everyone before me has indicated buyers remorse is common as is depression/anxiety post op. no one should ever make major life decisions while not thinking rationally. We have many hormonal surges post op as we are losing fat. Chalk it up to that.

You are responding the way you are probably because you feel out of control...many of us soothed with food. You can't do that any more.

believe me, you are in control of your outcomes. take your vitamins, eat healthy you will be fine. I actually have had to reduce some of my vitamin supplements.

Some people die in car accidents, yet I still drive a car. I can continue live my life and drive defensively or I can do tons of research on car accidents and decide not to leave my house for fear of being in a car accident.

My advice is like others. Get help to get through what you are going through. worrying about things that will probably never happen is not a productive way to spend your time, or a healthy one.

Originally, I didn't want RNY because of malabsorption - it just didn't seem right. I wasn't a candidate for VSG due to gerd and I was really disappointed. After talking to my doctor, other patients and doing a TON of research, I learned I would be just fine as long as I took great care of myself - so basically it was up to me. I was at peace and went forward with no regrets, even after. Now, 9 months out - I know it was the best thing I could have ever done for myself and I am happier than ever I did this.

I was 48 years old...Oh how I wish I had done this at 25!! My life would have been so different. YEARS in the shadows and sitting life out - not really living. Just think of the wonderful gift you have given yourself. Your health will get better, not continue to decline and you won't have wasted years being miserable like I did.

Not sure if this will help how you feel, but I think its important to hear all sides - good, bad and ugly. I wish you the best, but mostly peace.

Thanks. Believe it or not, I do feel like that. I hated sitting out and watching everyone else live and that was my main motivator for doing this. I have lost many good friends because I could never go out and do things with them. I was miserable and angry with myself and didn't want to live the rest of my life that way. Hopefully, this will give me what I need in life and I won't feel as bad about it.

Give it a few months. Hopefully as you heal, start feeling better, adjust to your new lifestyle, start see results and are able to do things you couldn't before you - will be at peace.

While I had a different procedure (more drastic and anatomy changing than RNY) I was 22 when I had surgery. I was as healthy as one could get other than my weight. But I knew I was on borrowed time and when NOTHING was helping my weight a choice was made. I spent over a year going over the major surgeries offered, so yes I started my journey at 21.

Give yourself time. I cant say I felt remorse, truely I felt like finally I can gain control (though this year we finally found out what was triggering my obesity as it was causing me major issues...yet lab and book healthy...yay for autoimmune disorders). Ill be 12 years post WLS tomorrow. Kept up on labs and vites, no problems there. Its a responsibility you must take seriously, but eventually its second nature.

It will give you freedom!
