Here I go

After VSG 11 years ago I have gradually put on nearly all the weight I lost. I have severe reflux and a narrowing at the bottom of my stomach. My surgeon suggests I convert my sleeve to a bypass and I have decided to go ahead but I am very nervous about dumping. Can anyone give me some advice please.

The best advice is good ole common sense. Don't eat a lot of sugar or carb heavy food and you won't dump.

Dumping is seen as a benefit. Hasn't happened to me but then again I haven't really tested my limits in the bad food department.

There are a lot of sleevers revising to RNY because of acid. They all feel sooooo much better not having to deal with the horrible reflux afterwards.

Originally, I intended to have VSG. When I met with my surgeon to discuss options, he said because of my terrible GERD he'd recommend the RNY. He said that he's doing a lot to sleeve conversions to RNY because of reflux. So glad I knew before hand. I suffered with GERD for 20+ years. 16 days post-op and none of those symptoms!

Same here. I wanted and did all of the research for VSG, but the doctor told me that I could have it if I wanted it but that I would be back in having another surgery changing that from VSG to RNY. I'm so glad I chose to go ahead with the RNY.

That must feel great!

We adjust to horrible conditions, and don't need to. I know several people who had to sleep every night sitting up, because of gerd. When they could finally sleep lying down, it looked like they felt like crying.

What I found most odd is, VSGers and RNYers have to live the same lifestyles to be successful. Same foods, same activity, same supplements. We can't feel what our new insides are like, at all. I just don't quite comprehend why so many are dead set against RNY.

Just like Babsinga I was afraid of malabsorption and dumping.

Hi,

Speaking from personal experience,

Had a lapband in 2003. Prolapsed and my stomach grew over it and had it revised to a sleeve in 2008. For 9 years I suffered with GERD, hernia and other issues with swallowing. But I was afraid of RNY and did not want malabsorption. Finally conceded and revised to RNY. I haven't dumped yet and do not plan to, but so far so good. I wasn't really a sweets eater before surgery so the only way I would dump is off of high fat food which I have avoided during ongoing weight loss.

Stay away from foods with sugar or high fat and you should be fine. I thought I dumped once after eating salmon but it turned out the salmon was just off.

I haven't dumped at all in 6 months since surgery. I don't test it though; I'm very careful about what I eat.

I'm only four months out, but the only issues I've had are caused by eating too fast. I do avoid the sugary fat stuff, but it's easy since hunger is basically gone right now (just in my head at least).

I wouldn't let the fear of dumping stop you, it's the fear of letting yourself EAT the food that causes dumping that should be your primary concern.
