WLS scheduled!
Wow! I am scheduled for an RNY on Aug 14th! Finally got the call today that the insurance company is ready to go. All the i's are dotted and t's crossed! YES! two week liquid diet is a bear though since I wasn't quite prepared for it to be quite so quick....I'm psyched but also a bit nervous. Weird since I've been wanting this for 15 years...I think its just the fact that the surgery is scarier now that i'm older and not as invincible as I once was. AND my surgeon looks sooooo young. I also got a weird feeling since he was pushing a sleeve so hard....Like, does he not know HOW to do the RNY? He offers both so...Now the 2 week wait....
I think most surgeons prefer to push the sleeve because of the fact that there is somewhat less for people to worry about after. The sleeve does not have as many malsorption issues that RNY does or can. Many of them also refer to the different surgeries as stepping stones, like step 1 is band, step 2 is sleeve, step 3 rny and step 4 is DS. I think they prefer people try the beginning before just jumping to step 3, because if that doesn't work very well, they are very, very limited to what is available after, which would be band over bypass or DS. Good luck when your surgery comes, I'm sure you will do wonderful. Mine is August 7th so 1 week before ya. Just take my advice and listen to all the wonderful people here who have gone before us. They have wonderful wisdom and know what we are going to be going into :)
I insisted on this one(rny) mostly because of known history of success. I'm 50 this year and I want this to be a success. I don't plan on any future wls's even if I don't lose as much as I want. You're probably right about him wanting me to have a stepping stone but I see it as a doc that wants me back again for more surgery....hahaha.
Good luck next week and congrats! Keep us updated....
I was 56 on the day of surgery (one month shy of turning 57) and it has been a great decision for me. I totally get the "my doc is so young" feeling. I'm pretty sure my surgeon is about the same age as my son - maybe even a year or so younger. I didn't care how old he was, just wanted him to be skilled. I feel he did a great job. Recovery was smooth with no complications. I'm now a little over a year out and at goal and maintaining. It's still a struggle to fight the food demons sometimes, but I want this to be the last time (after a lifetime of loosing and then gaining) I have to loose a significant amount of weight. Best wishes!

We could be twins! a life time of gaining and losing and gaining AGAIN... What I meant by being 50 is only that the quality of life goes down at about 72-75 for girls in my family and their life expectancy is only an average of 78 (if I don't add my sis in who died at 48 of a sudden heart attack). So, if I want to get any real living done then I only have 20 years to do it in and I don't want to spend that as a heavy person or in another wls surgery...every year counts at this point.

From what I've heard, this theory is incorrect. A sleeve surgery takes less time in the OR, therefore a surgeon can perform more of them in the span of a day.
If ANY surgeon tells you to start with a band, or to plan on having multiple surgeries, run far, FAR away from his/her office.

So you know...the usual disclaimer...yada yada yada...newbie...pre-surg...yada yada yada. :D So in our first meeting my surgeon talked about the statistics that they use at Baylor--that at 5 years out the statistical differences in long term loss/weight maintenance are almost--yeah, remember ALMOST only really applies to hand grenades and horse shoes--but RNY and VSG have almost the same metrics. She is also pro VSG for me because of the malabsorption potential with Femara, my cancer drug...so I'm sure that's a big part of it. She gave rather grim 5 year metrics for either, so I had to pull up my big girl panties and remember our OH vets who have quite a different and WAY more positive set of metrics at 5 years!
Good luck and you'll do super!! Congrats!
