Thanks.

Yes that is what i have been reading. Funny how I did not see this before so I can just be mentally prepared. I think I will be staying close to home as well. Just not strong enough as yet and with my tummy... just don't want to chance it.

Thanks for the advise.

Shel

Hey, glad your on the other side of the hump. I'm currently in the hump myself. Had surgery the 21st, was just released today.

My doctors office told me to bring my protein shakes. Every meal from the hospital, breakfast, lunch and dinner was 1 cup of chicken broth and 1 cup of ho****er to make tea, that's it! But aside from the protein shakes, Popsicle and water that's the only thing my doc allows for the first week. TBH, I'm having a very hard time getting enough liquids down as it is. I'm shocked you had the offer of oatmeal. No way I could get it down myself, yet.

Definitely look forward to joining everyone on the bench myself.

Laurel

Hey Laruel,

Welcome to the bench, there is lots of room.

What has been helping is knowing this will pass. Keep that in mind we are all going through it. Take it slow and you will get to the oatmeal. I was able to dilute the oatmeal cause it was brought by the hospital with the milk and have it. It was very little and liquid.

I've never been allowed oatmeal.

I am three years out. I wouldn't be at a normal BMI or maintained eating oatmeal.

Hi and Congratulations!

I am a newbie to RNY also. Revision sleeve to RNY due to chronic GERD. I also had a complication from blood thinners and went back to emergency rooms because I had blood in my bowels. I was so scared from that. Once I was assured it would go away and I wasn't bleeding to death, things improved dramatically.

Just started mushies and its awesome to have mushy baby food as opposed to liquids.

Congrats on having surgery. Glad you are home and resting and feeling better.

I had surgery at Toronto Western Hospital almost 4 year ago and I can't help but comment on a few things in your post.

Are you lactose intolerant now or just assuming you will be or were you going into surgery already lactose intolerant. I became lactose intolerant beginning of year 3, but its only milk and if I eat a lot of soft cheese like Boursin cheese then I get tummy upset. But you may not be lactose intolerant or many never become lactose intolerant, as you state only 50% of patients get it and its usually not within a few hours of surgery, its months or years down the road.

And can you define "my family had to bring a cooler with my food?" In the hospital its clear liquids so not sure what "food" you were eating in the hospital, I sure hope you were not actually eating food. Trust me you would not have starved in the hospital if no one brought you food for 24-48 hours.

Decaf coffee, decaf tea and jello are not made with cream. Lots of soups are broth based, not cream based. Lots of protein out there that is not cream based as well. Again are you lactose intolerant pre surgery or just assuming you are now? You might not be at 2 weeks out? Other than your milk you have no protein on your menu. And if you are lactose intolerant there are the brand name "Lactaid" pills you can buy at any pharmacy or Walmart to take a few before you drink a protein shake. I keep a small bottle in my purse as my husband has been lactose intolerant (he is NOT a WLS patient) for about 20 years and he needs them.

And I am going to tell you that your menu is not good at all. And before you get all pissed off and tell me off and say "THAT IS WHAT MY CENTRE HAS ON THE MENU PLAN," trust me what you are eating is exactly what Toronto Western handed out to me as well to eat as a fresh post op. Its wrong. They build these menus off the Food guide for a normal person, not a post bariatric person. There is a ZERO room for cream of wheat, oatmeal, fruit sauce or crackers or melba toast or mashed potatoes (regular or sweet potato) on a post bariatric menu.

I realize I may sound harsh and I am not trying to be mean, trust me I am trying to help you. Think about it, carbs are what made a lot of us obese to begin with, carbs as in white carbs such as crackers, cereal, oatmeal, potatoes, rice and carbs from sugar such as carby fruit (grapes) and carby veggies (corn). These are not things to be eating as a post bariatric patient.

I found OH and lucky for me I ditched the menu plans from TWH and followed the Vets on here who stick to high protein, low low carb, low calorie and don't eat white carbs. They are successful 5, 10, 15 years out and I wanted to be as well. You can too. If I didn't care Shel I would not waste my time typing out this post back to you, please take this advice as its intended as support and as someone who has done what you are doing just 4 years ago.

This is a hard at first and I know I am contradicting everything your Centre said but I am the one who had surgery not the people at your Centre they are just amazing a operations.

Best of luck, hope you continue to heal and every day gets better

I wish I could write as well as you do.

Even if I wanted to - I could not give the OP better advice/ feedback as you just did.

Any newly post op or pre-op person, please read it and copy and print it. It is really very valuable information Daisy provided here.

Fyi- I am speaking from experience- i am 9 years post op, and a few lbs below my personal goal, 10 lbs below my surgeon goal for me.
