Question about cheese and fat
on 7/20/17 11:47 am
Hi,
For the most part, I am "real milk" intolerant but I can eat real cheese, cottage cheese, yogurt and half and half.
I was wondering if all of you only eat low fat cheese sticks when you do eat cheese? Or can you handle full cheese at any point in time? Also fats; I noticed some of you are able to eat meat fat, steaks, ribs , sausage etc... At what point were you able to tolerate fat? I dont have a problem with no sweets but I love a great steak and a real cheese stick.

Hi babs
I am almost 4 yrs post op am I am lactose intolerant as well, but that only happened going into my 3rd year. I drink lactose free milk for coffee/tea. I eat full fat cheese, full fat cheese strings, full fat yogurt and use half & half if that's around.
I eat all meats with no problems. The only thing I avoid right now is bacon but that is because I had a gallbladder attack back in May and I am eating somewhat low fat to keep my gallbladder happy. But as soon as I get my GB out I will go back to full fat everything and eat tons of bacon!
I was able to tolerate fat on meats as soon as I was able to tolerate dense proteins. I think I tried steak last at maybe 4 or 5 months post op but not because of the fat but because of how dense it is.
I think being a couple weeks out of surgery you would be fine with a cheese stick (if your program allows it) and whenever your program allows steak go for it. Good luck!

I find it convenient to only associate with people who can't eat bacon. More for me.
My BFF is actually a diehard vegan.

Hi Daisy,
Thanks! I am on mushies next week and wondered how my tummy would feel with any kind of fat like cottage cheese or yogurt. My doctor has low fat but I would hate to think that after time I could not handle a cheese stick or have real bacon!!

So, you aren't even two weeks out yet... I couldn't even have anything but fluids for two weeks... then I was able to move on to pureed/soft foods until 6 weeks... after 6 weeks I could get a little adventurous and try anything I wanted to. (and in no means did that mean I actually COULD eat anything I wanted)
ground beef got stuck. But pieces of steak never did. Sausage was harder than bacon was. I believe it has to do with the cuts of meat they use in 'ground' meats. Chicken and pork? I couldn't do the white meats, but thighs and the pork steaks that are more marbled did OK. I still have to watch chicken breasts even now, and I just don't like dry white pork chops. I had a hard time with chicken wings, and thought I would never get to eat them again, but somewhere around 8 months out they got better.
I have never bought 'low fat' anything and meant to. I eat 'real' food as much as I possibly can. I don't restrict fat, really not at all.
I know some doctor's and NUTS preach the low fat eating, but mine didn't, and I am thankful I never bought into that. It will really depend on what your pouch will tolerate, as some people can't eat the things I eat.
If it doesn't work the first time, try again in a few weeks... things do change.

So Pammie,
You are making a lot of assumptions here. I am on a liquid diet still. This is not my first time to the rodeo.
I was curious whether or not people could tolerate fats period. The daily food reports that people put here don't say what kind of cheese they are eating. I love cheese and meats but it would be nice to know that if I had something marbled or real fat and not Frankenfood, that would give me something to look forward to.
