Home after revision sleeve to RNY and questions!

Hi Everyone,

My surgery was July 11th and after 9 years with the sleeve and 5 years with a band, I now have a RNY. I started with a lapband in 2003, then due to a prolapse was revised to a sleeve. I did well with the sleeve but had chronic gerd . During my surgery, my doc found a hiatal hernia and fixed that as well.

So now on protein shakes and liquids for another day. Week two is coming up and creamy soups (woohoo!) Still have nausea but drinking as much as I can.

So questions:

Is it possible to feel hungry at this stage? Not sure if it is head hunger or indigestion or true hunger. I feel like if I just had something solid that feeling of emptiness would go away. All the shakes are making me sick. I just want savory. I have been drinking bone broth which has 9 grams of protein per serving of 8 ounces to alternate from drinking protein shakes but still have that empty feeling.

I noticed that many of you don't seem to get a lot of protein? I see the daily meal reporting and most of these don't seem to exceed 100 grams per day even with shakes? Do any of you supplement with protein bars? Just wondering because the shakes make me feel icky.

Revision on 03/29/17

Good Afternoon,

I too had a revision from VSG to RNY in March 2017 so I've definitely been where you are not too long ago. I would say you are not truly hungry...the nerves have been cut and it usually takes 4-6 months post op for hunger to return, if at all. So, at 6 days post-op, you are dealing with head hunger. You will feel "full" at the solid food stage where you eat dense protein (chicken, beef, pork, etc).

As far as protein, you may not get 100g daily at this stage. It's OK--you will work your way back to your daily protein goals. As you know, everyone is different so not everyone is trying to achieve 100g of protein each day. For me, I am a carnivore--lots of meal all day with usually some yogurt--no veggies. I get 100+ most days but that is just me.

I started protein bars in the solid food stage, not soft food. However, this time around, I eat them occasionally--they were triggers for me. Have you considered adding a protein shake to either coffee (if your surgeon approves it) or tea? I add a full protein shake to my decaf coffee and chai tea throughout the day. I get my fluids in and protein.

I hope you feel better and find something for the nausea.

I wish you much success on your journey.

Thanks for the advice. I have been managing three protein shakes, 2 bone broth 8 ounces, crystal lite decaf tea. Today I got in 80 grams of protein. I was just wondering long term. I am a carnivore as well so have no worries meeting requirements with shake support. Just nauseous from the sweetness of the protein shakes.

Yes, I am drinking the syntrax with decaf coffee. THat is one that I can tolerate. My doctor gave the goal of 80-100 a day minimum so that is where I am getting the number .

I am a VSG to RNY revision because of GERD. I would be surprised if, once you're cleared for solid food, you need to supplement with shakes or protein bars. I was getting 80-100g of protein in with food shortly after I was released to eat. Hang in there, it will get better as soon as you can eat!

My RNY was June 27, 2017. Like you I have chronic GERD & still take a PPI medication for it - ironically I no longer have to take medication to control my blood sugar. As for being hangry for more than liquid protein I would proceed with caution, if for no other reason than not wanting a flare of acid reflux. If you do eat more than bone broth or a protein shake I would think yogurt would be the mildest food you could eat, because of the probiotics. I found that eating SF popsicles helped when I was tired of liquid everything.

But make sure that in your hearts you honor Christ as Lord. Always be ready to give an answer to anyone who asks you about the hope you have. Be ready to give the reason for it. But do it gently and with respect. 1 Peter 3:15 (NIVR)

I had similar experiences. Anything sweet nauseated me, so my stock of ready-made protein shakes was no help. I had to order a flavorless Isopur protein powder. I also felt "hungry." I wanted savory, so broth was a favorite. My homemade mushroom soup with the mushrooms strained out was a life saver. I also thinned mashed potatoes to a soupy consistency with milk. That made my tummy feel good. Didn't take much at all. Plain Greek yogurt and cottage cheese were also staples for me since my body loves dairy. I also just drank milk when I felt queasy. That might not work for most people, but it's always been good for me. Again, not much, usually just an ounce or two.
I never did get into the sugar-free jello, popsicles, etc. Firstly, aspartame; secondly, sweet. The first protein bar I tried at probably 8 weeks out made me sick. Haven't tried one since.
Later, thinned down refried beans were satisfying. In fact, refried beans sounds good right now. Think I'll have some with my taco meat!
I'm moving slowly. Dense pork and steak still do not sit well with me. I'm still eating mostly chicken and ground beef.

Have you tried unflavored protein powder added in to broth. You'll get your savory with protein.

Hi, I looked for some today and couldn't find any unflavored whey protein isolate. I can order online but of course would have to wait even with Amazon. :)

That's where I got mine. I add some to yogurt sometimes just for the protein boost.

I'm 10 months out, but there are those days where for what ever reason you need an easy boost to the protein total. Yogurt is a slider, but if I use it as a evening snack, by the time it's gone I'm asleep. LOL

I know of an unflavored protein through INJURY. I used it when I first had my Lap Band put in.. it was great. I am going to order some before I have my Band to RNY revision on Aug. 7th!

I am also stocking up on the Chicken stock that has some protein in it.. I will mix the unflavored protein powder in it.
