Newbie, 3 days out, question about ounces of liquid?

Hi All,

I am sooooo thankful for all of the information and support here! I probably would not have gone ahead with the surgery without all of this information and support!!!

(I just had to get that out! I have been 'hovering' for years!)!

Now, my question! The nutritionist gave me a handout saying to drink 4 ounces of liquid every hour. How long do I need to wait before drinking the next 4 ounces? I'm wondering how long it takes for liquid to get through. I don't want to stretch my pouch, but waiting an entire hour doesn't seem right or necessary. (I'm hoping 'no question is a stupid question!')

Thanks,

Jessiegirlie

The best answer may be you want a minimum of 64oz of water daily. Assuming you sleep 8 hours that's 4 ounces for every hour that you are awake.

It's not really a problem if you to drink more than 4 oz an hour. I used to drink a protein shake in an hour and they're 11 ounces and much thicker than water.

Thank you ScottAndrews for your quick reply!

My main concern is that I'm only 3 days out from surgery and I don't want to tear any stitches.

Just don't chug it. Trust me you'll feel it if you take in too much at once.

I couldnt drink rink more than 1 big sip at a time at first. Now I can do a few ounces before my pouch says stop.

The first few weeks I drank one ounce every 15 minutes while awake.

Liquid will always slide through, just pay attention to what feels comfortable to your new pouch. You won't stretch it. In the beginning I preferred to pace myself so I was done by late afternoon drinking, so I didn't have to worry about drinking at night and getting up to go to the bathroom at night.

Warning like that are really for people who have a hard time drinking, and not getting in enough. You won't stretch or hurt anything with drinking. If it's uncomfortable, slow down or stop. If it isn't a problem, drink away. Extra fluid will be a big help for you.

Sipping is the key. The nuts say 4 oz per hour, because in the early days getting 4 oz down can feel really hard. However liquids flow through the stomach as the lower valve just lets them pass. It closes slightly for "full liquids" to staring the solids, and closes to solids.

So it won't be until you are eating solids that there will be any volume (hense pressure) in the stomach.

I found that drinking enough was the key to keeping my nausea down.

So sip, Sip, SIP!
