Thank you for sharing. I wasn't warned of this, but I did notice how fast alcohol affects me now. It clearly metabolizes differently. I do have a beer or glass of wine occasionally. Like maybe once or twice a month. But I am rarely in social drinking situations like I was in my younger days...it would have been more of a temptation for me then, and I hope all surgeons will discuss this problem more.

Yes and neither was I. And like you alcohol hit me much quicker. They kind of compare it to how cocaine affects a normal person. It's funny but when I read that I was like. I've never done cocaine so I can't attest to the validity of that statement. The unfortunate part is though is that I was 28 when I started.
My surgeon absolutely warns people about alcohol pre-surgery...and one Holiday season sent out a mailing to remind people...

I had my surgery at Mayo and in my pre op counseling ...not the surgeon, I was told about the possibility of alcohol problems was told I could easily switch addictions. I was told the alcohal would go straight to my liver and I sure didn't reroute my body to kill my liver. God bless you all who suffer
I'm sorry you had to ride through hell in a hand cart. My program was for vertical gastric sleeve, and the repeatedly emphasized that alcoholism is often a outcome for patients to choose to drink alcohol after surgery.
I lived with an alcoholic for several years, so have no desire to go there. When I drank prior to surgery, I hated feeling drunk,or even tipsy. So I believe that alcohol is powerful and I need to wait at least a year before I try any, and if I try some 1/2 a glass of wine will have to be the max. The good news is that here in the North East, bars treat you really well if you are with a group and are the designated driver, drinking water all night.
Best of luck with the battle with the daemon.

It is better to travel and get lost...
Than never to travel at all.
I live in Canada and part of EVERY appointment is the emphasis on NO alcohol, caffeine or carbonation as part of your preparation and absolutely NO alcohol, caffeine or carbonation EVER AGAIN after. It is not even a point of discussion.
