Hi Everyone, Just had my RNY on monday and its hard to eat...
You're a patient of Dr Wong? If so, me too.
The first week is pretty tough. I call it the "What the **** did I do to myself?" phase.
You gotta get those fluids in. Doesn't necessarily have to be water but it can't have sugar. And get yourself some Premiere Protein shakes from Costco or BJ's. They have 30 grams of protein.
I used to keep one of those small water bottles they gave at the hospital by my bed and I'd try and drink some whenever I woke up in the middle of the night. Then for breakfast I'd have a decaf coffee or tea. Then a protein shake (it would take me an hour just to get that down!) Then I'd be pretty much halfway done with my fluids and protein before lunch. I didn't really like the shakes at first it I'd blend them with some peanut butter powder and that helped
It's gonna take some time before you can really eat. I just had puréed soup for about 2 weeks
By the time I was back at the office for my first post op visit I was down 10 pounds from surgery day. Stay away from the scale if it's stressing you
Hi Scott yes I am a patient of Dr. Wongs... I feel the same thing... I am trying the Premier protein but its way too sweet even watered down. the powdered peanut butter I think I want to try. My post op visit is on Tuesday because I had some things happen to me this week they weren't and I wasn't expecting. He calls me back or I speak with the Dr. Teixiera and the nurses ... That I must say is the best part thus far They are communicative and do what they say I appreciate that immensely. My Fiance doesn't want me going out alone since my head is so loopy feeling with the now low blood sugar I keep getting but I follow what he says and drink some water down apple juice and my vision is blurry after a while. I think I am done with the scale for right now, it hurts to see the numbers and my mind can't wrap my head around it.
Hang in there Winnie. It'll get easier. Nothing g you can do but take it day by day at this point. We've all been in your shoes and lived to tell about it.
Consider it your job to hydrate yourself. Your body's holding onto a lot of water right now and you have to let it know that there's plenty more coming so it lets it go.
Almost three month ago I was you, oh it was rough,. It does get easier, I am so glad I did this, and so will you. Just remember your fluids, and protein, and day by day you will get better.
I CAN DO ALL THINGS THROUGH JESUS CHRIST, WHO STRENGTHENS ME!

All because you were told you can advance doesn't mean you're ready to yet. Progress slowerrr if need be.
my doc didn't set a 64oz fluids intake right off the bat-- we started with a 48oz goal then moved it up as we could. Once I got past my 1 weeks of clear liquids, we moved to full liquids- yogurts, puddings, cream based soups etc. I lived off that and protein shakes for 2 weeks, then moved to soft foods, eggs, mashed meatballs etc.
in the first week I was super sensitive to the smell of other food cooking in the house. I've not been able to tolerate a vanilla flavored protein shake since pre-op. I was in pain for the first 4 days. I got past it all- you will too.

What everyone said. Plus, I kept my premiere protein in the freezer the first week or so, and drank it nearly slushy consistency. Getting it as cold as possible helped kill the sweetness.
Water on the other hand, I had to drink room temp, and flavoured and from a sports bottle. You will find a system that works!

For my first two weeks, I ate alot of popsicles and drank warm tea. Those differences in temperature helped me alot. Give it a try.
