I have a nasty flu bug. That's got me pretty nauseous. Is a small cup of ginger ale something that would still help post op? (I'm only 1 month out so it may be a huge no no)

The sugar may make you sick and dump.

Are you referring to sugar free? I would call and ask my surgeon about it.

Sugar free is fine. It's the bubbles that might give you an issue.

At one month, the bubbles will likely feel horrible.

Ginger ale isn't a magic cure for flu, it's just another comfort food. Have some tea or something else.

I had some tea and it helped. I'm not a big pop drinker in general but was getting desperate. The tea was a good idea!

It is my understanding that we are not allowed anything with carbonation. We were told it is hard on the lining of our pouch.

I would consider a decaffienated ginger tea or chamomile to soothe you symptoms!

Lots of people drink caffeinated, carbonated sugar-free beverages post-surgery. It may be uncomfortable early out, but there is no actual medical reason not to do so other than discomfort...

I would not recommend that the poster drink it this early after surgery as the bubbles can hurt (trust me, they do... ), but months or years post-RNY there is no reputable research showing it should be avoided.

I'd stay away from artificial sweeteners; best to stick with natural (non-chemical) products like the tea the above poster recommended. Hope you feel better soon.
