Iron - Ferrous fumarate or Ferrous gluconate questions

Hi Everyone!

I am preparing for RNY-and my doctor wants me to start taking:

Ferrous fumarate or Ferrous gluconate (approx 60mg IRON)

Every where I look to see 27 mg of iron, 36 mg of Iron (on labels)

Has anyone found one that contains 'approx' 60 mg?

Thanks so much!!

Have a Blessed Day....

I've never seen any of the ferrous salts that large.

BUT: do yourself a favor and don't take anything with ferrous in the iron source. They will constipate you horribly, and can cause stomach upset. They are also not absorbed as well. It's the old school choice, and is the most widely available and inexpensive because of it.

The best iron source is heme iron, but it is pricey. Carbonyl is next. Neither will constipate you.

Most have great results with patch iron, but some do not.

Wow... so Grim you just sent me down a rabbit hole. I had never heard of heme (meat based) vs non-heme (plant based) iron so I did some Googling. Check out this video and let me know what you think. It looks pretty convincing.

Awesome. Thank you! I am currently taking a non-heme. I checked last night on the bottle. I bought it because it was pretty cheap. Not sure if I should change up when this bottle runs out.

Do you do the iron patch and take iron? I've just been doing the patch.

Grim, I am also looking at switching to the patch for iron. My thinking is that because it's not taken by mouth it will NOT affect the absorption of calcium (and vice versa)? Is that correct? Thanks for your input!

That's been my experience. I do patch multis, D3/Calcium, and iron.

I was up to 2500 per day of calcium citrate, and was still tanking. Calcium and iron have been much improved on patches.
