Good Morning! I know different surgeons suggest different vitamins but mine gave me the following directions: multi-vit that includes iron, 1500mg calcium citrate (500 3X a day), 500 micrograms B12 sublingual.

I take

  • two chewable multi-vitamins per day (two is a serving, my office likes you to spread out the intake to improve absorption).
  • three 500mg tablets of calcium (1 tablet three times a day)
  • one gel D3 with each calcium pill
  • Sunday and Wednesday I take one sublingual (under the tongue) B12 tablet
  • one quick dissolve iron tablet at least two hours before/after a calcium supplement or the calcium will block the absorption of the iron
  • 1 chewable biotin pill per day (optional)

I'm happy to share what I take, however, I cannot stress enough that every person is individual and really needs to adjust and tweak what they take according to their labs.

Morning:

Multi, 500mg calcium citrate, dry D3 1000 I.U., B-complex

mid-morning:

500 mg calcium citrate, B12 2500 sublingual (3x a week)

lunch:

Multi, 500 mg calcium citrate

Dinner:

500 mg vitamin C, Iron as ferrous fumarate 60mg

Bedtime:

inositol, magnesium citrate, Iron as carbonyl 45 mg, 500 mg of vitamin C

^^^^^this, re "every person is individual".

You had surgery in 2009. If you haven't had labs done in awhile please get a full panel ( 15 vials ) and then supplement accordingly. Your family doc can help you with this.

I do not - and never have taken B12 even though most RNY'ers do. I have never been deficient in this vitamin, but have been over time in Zinc, D3 and a few others.

Its important - get your blood work!

Good luck

If wanting guidance with vitamin-taking, I think www.bariatricadvantage.com and www.vitalady.com might be two places worth contacting for advice and options. My preference for a multivitamin is the brand Centrum Silver found in a silver box, quantity 60 chewable tablets, and at under $10 per bottle fits most budgets. For calcium citrate, I purchase the Walgreens version of the brand name Citracal when Walgreens sells their calcium citrate for Buy One Get One Free pricing.
