I'm starting my pre op diet today my surgery is coming up fast on June 12th. Did anyone else struggle with this? I'm only 5 hours in and it's rough but I'm trying to power through it!

the first two or three days are really tough. After that ketosis starts kicking in, and it gets easier. I'm not saying *easy*, but definitely easier. Just hang in there...

I'd worry about the person who said the pre-op diet is easy. Yup- it was a struggle. 14 days was mine- no food at all- just protein shakes, broth and water. I did allow myself one meal during that time for my husbands birthday dinner. I think I still vividly remember everything I had to pass up in those two weeks.

by day four its more manageable IMO.

Don't kill me but mine wasn't that bad. 3 shakes, I snack (small fruit, veggies or yogurt) and a dinner made of 3 oz protein and a veggie (totaling under 300 cals). Totally doable.

I didn't really struggle with my pre-op. I have not had hunger just desires. I'm doing 4 Opti900 shakes/day and only 25 cal over and above. I drink a TON of ice water. I made major changes when I started this process that were hard. I hit the OR on Wednesday. :D

My surgery is on Monday. I've been on the pre-op diet since May 22. I read on here and heard from people in my life who have had to do a liquid diet that it would start to get easier by about day 4, and that I wouldn't be as hungry. I didn't believe a single one of them. I just couldn't imagine how it could get easier the longer I went without substantial food.

The first four days were absolute hell. All I wanted was to shove food in my mouth. I thought about food every hour of the day. It was pretty awful.

By day 4 it did start getting easier. I am still so surprised that my energy level didn't really change and how much easier it was to get through the day only consuming 800-1000 calories.

You HAVE to meal plan. And you HAVE to plan ahead. If you know you're going to be out and about for a few hours, pack a lunchbox of approved things you can have. Drink water or a protein shake when you're craving. If the craving is still there after 15 minutes, you haven't stopped thinking about it. Stay busy. I'm an Addictions Counselor and I have really had to practice what I preach these last 2 weeks! Reach out when you feel like you're about to lose control. Journal and self-talk.

Its not going to be easy, but remind yourself constantly how much it's going to help your recovery. You can do this!

Thank you! I needed to hear that the urge to just want to eat is substantial so I'm doing my best to keep busy. I clean the house walk the dog lol. Anything to keep my mind off of food.

Not allowing myself to get really, really hungry really helped curb the cravings and epatations to give in. I have made sure I have some jello or yogurt between "meals." It's when I haven't eaten in 4+ hours when I really started to feel like I could lose control. Feel free to PM me if you're struggling or just want to vent! It's definitely easier when you have someone who will hold you accountable.

My RNY is scheduled for June 12, too! I actually intended to do my pre-op diet for a month instead of the required 2 weeks, but when it came to it I found myself curiously reluctant. In the past when beginning a diet I've been pretty gung-ho, but this time I just inched towards the cliff with some reluctance. The sense that my life is about to substantially change, from here on out, was very strong (still is). I admit to having had some food funerals. But when I was 2 weeks out I buckled down. I found my physical energy low yesterday, especially when I first got up, but my hunger yesterday (day 3) was fairly minimal. I do miss having that big mug of coffee I savored every morning though! But it is a small thing to give up for the chance to truly reset my life. I am feeling very grateful for this chance and deeply aware that life in so many ways is about to change for the better. My deepest sense is that I have to grab this miraculous opportunity with both hands and hold on tight!

Wishing you a good week and great success!
