Congratulations for signing up. There is something about an event with all the people around that sorta pushes you to achieve a little bit more. AND.... I don't think you can ever take too long or go to slow when you begin to run. When I go on forums for running and tri's so many people try to push the distance or speed and end up with an injury. You are doing it the right way.
