Surgery during the holidays?
My WLS was on November 26th, 2012--- the best Thanksgiving/Christmas Holiday Season ever. Medical staff, friends, and family were like Heavenly angels caring for my every need. Being freed from obesity was like being on a spiritual high with food being low on the list of priorities. However, I do remember asking my husband to eat a piece of Christmas divinity for me so I could watch him enjoy what I couldn't. Clearly, food will always be my "drug of choice;" it needs to be checked at the door every hour, every minute, every second of every day. My request to make holidays activity-based instead of food-based has kinda worked; for example, the upcoming Memorial Holiday weekend includes going down the Spirit Mountain Alpine Coaster ride located in Duluth, Minnesota---can't wait. I think your WLS is scheduled for the perfect time of year. Cheers.
My surgery was 12/5/16 and boy did I dread going through the holidays! And now....boy am I glad I did have to go through it then! I found that I am stronger and more dedicated to the cause. It's not about the food/socializing any more. It's about the relationships (family and friends). I know I can always take the food/liquids I need with me in case I need them. I am blessed that everyone around me is always been supportive (and jealous!).
You can do this!!
I had my RNY surgery Dec 22, 2014 and busted out of the hospital at 4pm Christmas Eve. I was horizontal on Christmas day with my big present being a new life-style! I stayed on the sofa and was still a part of the festivities. I recovered through New Year's. Getting over the surgery is what you will be thinking about.
Having surgery at Christmas means that I did the pre-op diet from about Halloween, through Thanksgiving, and all the Holiday parties. That was difficult, but the promise of WLS helped me make good decisions. So, you talk, you walk, you get a new hobby, you learn to find an exercise that you enjoy, and shop and generally get used to living your life without food as a constant companion. .
The real question is - Do you want the surgery enough - there is never a good time - there is always some food related event around the corner.
Personally, The Holidays sounds like a great time to make that shift. I was happy to be 70 pounds less by summer.
Good luck with your journey, whatever you decide.
