Nutrition advice
Hi everyone. I had my RNY on October 28/16. So I am seven months out. I feel great and am down 70lbs. (Yaa)
I am training for my first marathon. (Only a 5K), but a great place to start. All my reading mentions to have carbs if you are training, so I have started eating a bit of whole bread, or ww pasta etc. Now i'm up 3lbs!!!
My question is, do you have to eat carbs in this form? Can I have extra veggies or fruit in place of pasta, rice etc?
Thanks for the help
I don't know if it's just me, or if it's everyone, but refined carbs make me retain water.
I'm not training for a run, but when I need extra carbs I eat them in the form of beans and veggies. Carrots, sweet potatoes, and black beans are all healthy options.

I think long distance runners eat carbs prior to a race but if you look at your average competitive long distace runner they're lean like a string bean!
For the rest of us, carbs are not a friend. We have energy stored on our bodies. Fat. People with no fat need energy from food. Carbs.
Good afternoon! I have run several 1/2 marathons since my surgery and I have not needed additional carbs prior or after a training or the run itself. I do increase my fluid intake the week before. I usually eat a banana after a run to avoid leg cramps that I have had. During the runs I have kept either a boiled egg, string cheese or protein bar in my fanny pack thing in case I need something to keep me going. Good luck!!
I'm pretty sure that the post-race banana is the only reason I race. :D

I am in the minority as I do "carb load" before a long race. I just ran my 5th 1/2 marathon and I do increase my carb consumption the week before a race so I can increase my glycogen stores. After my revision, I have dumping syndrome, so I don't add carbs by eating foods like bread, rice or pasta. I'll increase my dairy, eat sweet potatoes, oatmeal with peanut butter, etc. to give me a boost.
In my opinion, whether you "carb load" depends on where you are in your weight loss and the amount you're running. Would I "carb load" for a 5k? No. I wouldn't need any additional nutrition for a 5k run. I only increase my cabs before a 1/2 marathon by eating more of the foods identified above. Would I carb load if I wasn't at goal? No. My body still has plenty of fat it can burn for energy. Do I carb load now, 3 years after surgery and at goal? Yes, because I have very little in reserve.
I think you have to weigh what works best for you. If I had to guess, I would say you likely don't need to increase your carbs at all, let alone by eating bread or pasta.
