What foods make you dump?
Hi all, I am new to this forum but not to being post op RNY 7/2009 . I experience dumping ALOT. I have tried to figure out which foods, drinks, serving size etc causes it so to try to either cut the portion size or avoid it altogether.
I will eat instant oatmeal( yes flavored) one packet and I get the rapid heart rate deal. No sweating, confusion, etc. If I take in too much sugar in a short time I get this rapid heart rate( tachycardia) and if sitting I can just fall right to sleep. I have gotten so tired in my car driving I would start to close my eyes, very dangerous!. So now I try to be more conscious of how much sugar I take in. I can get dumping from say eating watermelon or cantaloupe. If I eat too much of any type of food I feel this way. I spoke with my surgeon and he said obviously we don't want you to have dumping syndrome but if you do, know that it is not dangerous such as for your heart. But still just the feeling of running a mile when I am sitting on my couch is horrible! I take full responsibility and know weighing 20 lbs less than when I had the sugery now is horrible and embarassing. I tell people I had GB and I can tell they are thinking geeze how bug was she pre op?? Ugh. Sorry for long post..
It's been years but salmon.... I loved, loved salmon and after about 4 months after surgery I tried some and thought I was going to die. Fast forward 13 years later while I don't dump I do find if I eat anything really oily or greasy (I never would eat foods like that LOL) I get that feeling of just let me get sick!

Pure Protein bars. I can eat 1/3 of the bar fine, any more and I'll dump.

Generally, anything heavy on carbs for me, like bread, pasta, rice. Also anything with too much fat like chips were all a huge problem.
I also couldn't eat anything with serious refined sugars in it. Think baked goods- what a nightmare those are!
To this day +15 years out I can't eat pasta unless I have a serious quantity of protein before it. And I can't eat ice cream either, at all (bummer).
Randomly, the only protein that would cause me dumping (delayed) was Ham. (Could be a combination of the fat & sugar issue there.)
Not everyone experiences dumping, so you may not. You never know.
Best,
