What foods make you dump?

Thanks for this Kat. I think we need to be reminded of what constitutes dumping and what is going on in our body - behind the scenes as it were.

To the OP: Rapid heart rate, sweating, and feeling like you're going to die are all symptoms of dumping. They are also symptoms of caffeine overdose. It's possible you're confusing the two, especially since your issue with coffee is resolved by drinking decaf.

just a thought.

I'm one of the few who dump. It's rather unpleasant. For me it's early dumping and it really only happens with liquids. For example, if I drink milk too fast, the natural milk sugars make me dump. Pretty much anything other than water requires patience.

I found out the hard way unfortunately, by chugging a full 8oz glass of milk when I was very thirsty, but I'm super careful now.

I would think Kat is right, it's most likely the acids in coffee that are upsetting your new stomach.

Edited to add: I also don't eat foods that could cause dumping, I'm not interested in finding out my limits as far as solid foods go, so I don't take chances. Dumping is NOT fun, it puts me out of commission for 1-3 hours depending on the rest of my days food intake. (Mornings are especially sensitive when my system is empty from the night before).

My wife is the same way with liquids. She has to pretty much water everything down. I also try to stay away from regular coffee, and stick to my decaf. As you said, dumping isn't fun. Mine usually lasts about 20 mins when it does happen.

I don't think I really dump. I do seem to have a blood sugar reaction when I eat more than a very small serving of something very carb-y,,,but it isn't as severe as what I've seen dumping described. Mostly I feel very sleepy and cranky. A lie down and lots of water seem to help.

I agree with you. Carbs seem to do a number on me. Heart racing, sleepy, sweaty, hot from the inside....

Sounds to me like you're not dumping, but instead dealing with caffeine induced peristalsis (or in layman's terms "caffeine makes you poop"). It can cause diahhrea-like bowel movements in some people.

I know what you mean about the pooping from caffeine. Trust me this is a dump. I get hot, disoriented, the mild shakes, it's all bad.

I can't find any anecdotal evidence or articles that say anything but refined sugars or too much fat cause dumping. However, what you describe ARE all symptoms of caffeine allergy/sensitivity.

Anyway, I didn't have RNY (although I researched the hell out of it before and after I decided on VSG), so aside from adding I really don't think you are suffering from dumping syndrome, I'll shut up now

I agree 100% Caffeine does not cause dumping syndrome.

I am allergic/intolerant to caffeine, and have been for 30+ years... if I get a cup of coffee and the server messes up and doesn't give me decaf, my symptoms are exactly as you describe... and it's bad. And I want to stuff my face with carbs to bring my blood sugars back to normal (I don't know if this actually helps, but it's what I crave when it happens). I'm like a drill sergeant when I order coffee out now.

Perhaps you have developed an insensitivity to caffeine... especially if this only happens when you drink the leaded stuff.
