Good day people.

I was just curious to hear, what foods make you dump?

You cannot "dump" on coffee. Dumping syndrome occurs when sugar moves too fast from the stomach to the duodenum in the first part of the small intestine in the upper gastrointestinal (GI) tract. This condition is also called rapid gastric emptying. Dumping syndrome has two forms, based on when symptoms occur:

  • early dumping syndrome: occurs 10 to 30 minutes after a meal
  • late dumping syndrome: occurs 2 to 3 hours after a meal -- which is far more accurately referred to as severe Reactive Hypoglycemia.

Dumping syndrome is caused by problems with the storage of food particles in the stomach and emptying of particles into the duodenum. Early dumping syndrome results from rapid movement of fluid into the intestine following a sudden addition of a large amount of food from the stomach. Late dumping syndrome results from rapid movement of sugar into the intestine, which raises the body's blood glucose level and causes the pancreas to increase its release of the hormone insulin. The increased release of insulin causes a rapid drop in blood glucose levels, a condition known as hypoglycemia, or low blood sugar.

So, you are not "dumping" on coffee. It just doesn't agree with you.

TO answer your query: I have never dumped in 3.5 years because I have never tested it by eating something that I am not supposed to. Additionally, most RNYers don't dump at all.

Thanks for this, Kat. As someone who dumps, I really wish doctors would do a better job in explaining what dumping is. This is a great description

To answer the OP's question. I have a pretty bad case of dumping syndrome. I dump on anything that has more than 6g of sugar OR fat. And I'm not just talking about added sugar like in a cookie, I'll dump on natural sugar such as that found in milk, fruit, etc. The crazy thing is I also will dump on strait protein (very rare) I also have early dumping syndrome and late dumping syndrome. If I had to choose, I'd take early dumping over late any day. For me, early dumping equals severe heart palpitations, profuse sweating, difficulty breathing and an overall feeling like I want to die. Late dumping is far worse. I know its coming on because I get very foggy and confused. I can't concentrate. My body then feels like its burning from the inside. My heart starts to pound and I have rivers of sweat pouring out of every pore in my body. I then get very dizzy, sleepy and disoriented. I never let it get that far, since I'm afraid if I do and pass out that I'll never wake up. I now carry food with me where ever I go and eat when I recognize the symptoms and confirm that my sugar is low.

I thought I only had one OH Berry Sister here - but I think you and I could be dumping sisters! I am exactly the same. I have no idea what eating a cookie would do to me besides make me wish for an early death. But almost everything you describe here - I've experienced too!

LOL, glad to have a dumping sister!! Have you dumped on protein? That's its own special brand of hell. It sucks when the one thing you think you can count on betrays you. And for anyone who feels like questioning me, it's been confirmed. I wore a continuous glucose monitor and checked my heart rate for weeks to confirm the fluctuations. It doesn't happen all the time, but it has happened. Fun times!

I actually have dumped on Protein. It is worse than dumping on a strawberry.

The last time it happened to me I was on an airplane flying from Europe back to Japan. I chose the Japanese menu and ate only fish. 2 hours later I was covered in ice cold sweat, grey, shaking, barely lucid. It was actually quite scary - especially for the stranger sitting next to me who thought I might be having a heart attack. It took hours and plenty of almonds to get me back to a decent place. Traveling (long haul flights) is always very tricky for me - seems like no matter if I order special meals, bring ton of protein bars (which can make things infintely worse) bags of peanuts and almonds or jerky, I have some kind of issue. I have also had these episodes confirmed with continuous monitoring, so for me at least, it's real.

Fun times indeed!

As someone scheduled for RNY surgery, I have to say that I find your experiences terrifying. Given the issues you have had with dumping even when careful to observe RNY dietary parameters, are you glad to have had your surgery? That is, for you, did it's benefits outweigh these severe dumping problems you have had?

Please don't let my experiences deter you in any way from making this life changing decision. I have never, ever regretted my choice to have RNY in August 2013 (after a LapBand in 2006) and I would have this same surgery performed every year over and over again if needed to enjoy the benefits and rewards of good health, self confidence and quality of life.

Please read and learn. Do your research so that if this you experience this kind of reaction, you will recognise it for what it is and know how to handle it. It isn't pleasant, and it can be random for me, but I know what it is and that I am not in fact dying - I just feel like death and need to eat high fat/high protein to get over it when it happenes. It means I need to be prepared - I always have nuts with me. But other than that - it isn't that big of a deal. I have no senstation of hunger, so I must eat by the clock. Keeping my blood sugars regular without huge fluctuations of insuline levels is key to my well being. I mess up from time to time and it is true that long haul travel - which I do frequently - and the subsequent time differences make it difficult, but not impossible, to keep up my eating my routine. I stuggle to keep weight on and haven't (yet) had to worry about regain, which I attribute to my strict eating.

You are welcome to read about my experience in extreme detail if you want on my profile. I have had plenty of complications and issues, but I am very happy and would recommend RNY wholeheartledly.

I have never been this thin, this healthy, this free from my obesity in my whole life. I hope you have a great experience!
