A Few Newbie Questions :):)
for starters you will love the rny compared to the band. it is completely different. As others have mentioned everyone is different.
- I have dumped twice (two days in a row...slow to figure it out) from my protein shake...from finishing it with two big gulps. easily managed. If i don't try and chug my food and I don't have a problem (so for me it was speed not food type that caused it). Cheese is a post op staple for most so not likely to cause an issue. I eat salmon Sashimi (high fat) avocado etc..never had an issue. I eat oats sometimes...never an issue (but shouldn't be because it isn't a simple carb). I eat blueberries and apple every day...never an issue. I have had a spoonful of my hubby's dessert to taste...never more than that because dumping sucks and I don't want to experiment with it.
- Never heard of someone dumping on vitamins
- Never have had a stuck episode or vomited. like every other bander...it was very common with the band. i have had steak..salads, sushi, chicken and all the other no-go foods with the band. it is totally different. You need to get rid of the band mentality. this is like feeling normal (before your band surgery) only you have less stomach capacity. there is no band there to get stuck on...did you get stuck before your band surgery? I have a friend who did have vomiting episodes...usually from eating to much or too quickly), stressing the new pouch....manageable I think.
- this is a question for your doctor. most say 12-18 months before alcohol. You don't want to do anything that could cause an ulcer and 5 weeks post op would be a definite risk zone. you certainly don't want to be drinking anywhere near enough post op to get a hangover. Alcohol addiction has plagued some people post op. from what i hear you get drunk quickly but also it doesn't last long..so if the feeling is something people are chasing you can see how that could become a problem very quickly.

Wow! Thank you so much to everyone for the tips, advice and words of encouragement. You all rock!! I switched dieticians today because I just wasn't feeling connected with the first one and the new one squeezed me in for a pre-op appointment to get me ready for the road ahead. I loved her and it was awesome! I made Loads of mistakes with the band, and I don't want to repeat them. She's super into low carb so and thinks that with my medical history, Im definitely insulin resisting so very carb sensitive.
You'll get there. I'm back to my lowest post band weight already, actually i think i've just surpassed it. Mine was 11 years ago.

Hey there! Nine years post-RNY here. (Just for perspective...that doesn't make me an expert lol):.
- Not everyone dumps. And it's impossible to predict what you'll dump on and what you won't in terms of whole foods. If you are a dumper, I would say it's safe to assume high-sugar and simple carb foods are going to bug you, but folks tend to react differently to fruits. I'm ok with some fruits and not others. My dumping seems to track well with the glycemic index, though, so I try to stay to lower GI fruits if at all possible.
- Most bariatric formulated chewables contain non-sugar sweeteners. You may want to check those out. Gummies are usually not recommended post-RNY because gummy material is generally made of animal fat. Fat is not well absorbed by a RNY system. So dry chewables would probably be the better value for you anyway. I don't know the latest data on gummy absorption though, so maybe someone else has a different perspective.
- Food can get stuck with RNY. Not sure if there is an increased or decreased likelihood with RNY over Lap-Band but I will say at the beginning of my post-surgical life I got stuff stuck all the time - even when I chewed really well!
- I don't think alcohol at five weeks is something your medical team would recommend, but double-check with them. Just in case, you may want to figure out a way to enjoy your party without the glass of wine. Typically three sips in and I am pretty darn tipsy. Not falling down drunk, but such that I usually stay quiet for fear of saying something dumb lol. I did not drink for the first time until I was about 2 years post-op.
